κατασκευάζω occurs in the more general sense of ";furnish,"; ";provide,"; in BGU IV. 1065.7 (A.D. 97) with reference to the purchase of a pair of bracelets which the goldsmith κατεσκεύασε αὐτῷ : cf. P Oxy XII. 1428.10 (iv/A.D.) τοὺς ὑπευθύνους τὴν ἐσθῆτα α ̣̓νεπι [κλή ]τ ̣οις ̣ τοῖς ὑφάσμασιν κατασκευάσαι, ";that the persons responsible provide (or manufacture) the clothing in irreproachable(?) materials."; For the use of the verb in the sense of building, or equipping a building, as in Hebrews 3:3, see P Tebt I. 33.8 (B.C. 112) (= Selections, p. 30) where, with reference to the visit of a Roman senator to the Fayüm, directions are given—φρόντισον ὡς ἐπὶ τῶν καθηκόντων τόπων αἵ τε αὐλαὶ κατασκ ̣ευα ̣σ ̣[θ ]η ̣σ ̣[ο ]ν ̣ται, ";take care that at the proper places the guest-chambers be got ready,"; and cf. ib. II. 342.16 (late ii/A.D.) τὸ κατασκευασθ (ὲν) ἐκ καινῆς ἐν Σομολ (ῶ) κεραμεῖον σὺν πᾶσι χρηστ (ηρίοις), ";the newly fitted pottery at Somolo together with all furniture"; (Edd.), P Amh II. 64.2 (A.D. 107) περὶ δαπάνης εἰς τὸ ἐκ καινῆς κατασκευαζόμενον βαλανεῖον, and P Oxy VI. 892.8 (A.D. 338) εἰς. . . [τ ]ὴν κατασκευαζ [ο ]μένην βορρινὴν πύλην τῆς πόλεως, ";for the construction of the north gate of the city"; (Edd.). From the inscrr. it is sufficient to cite Syll 500.22 (B.C. 320) where, with reference to the ὁδοί (cf. Matthew 11:10 al.) by which the procession was to reach the temple of Zeus Soter, it is provided—ὅπως ἂν ὁμαλισθῶσιν καὶ κατασκευασθῶσιν ὡς βέλτιστα.
For the subst κατασκευἡ, see P Ryl II. 157.16 (A.D. 135) τῆς δαπάνης τῆς τε ἐπισκευῆς καὶ κατασκευῆς τοῦ ξυλικοῦ [ὀργάνου, ";the cost of keeping and repairing the wooden water-wheel"; (Edd.), P Oxy XII. 1461.12 (A.D. 222) ε [ἰ ]ς κατασκευὴν ἄλ ̣(λας) (δραχημὰς) κ ̣̄, ";for repairs 20 drachmae more"; (Edd.), Michel 487.14 (ii/B.C. ad init) εἰς τὴν κατασκευὴν τοῦ θεάτρου. For κατασκεύασμα, cf. Syll 169.4 (c. B.C. 306) εἴς τε τὰ κατασκευάσμα [τα τοῦ ἱεροῦ καὶ τῆ ]ς πανηγύρεως, and Aristeas 52 προεθυμεῖτο μὲν οὖν ὁ βασιλεὺς ὑπέροπλόν τι ποιῆσαι τοῖς μέτροις τὸ κατασκεύασμα, ";now, the king’s intention was to make this piece of work of gigantic dimensions"; (Thackeray)
