תָּמַם fut. יִתֹּם, rarely יִתּוֹם Ezekiel 47:12 תִּתֻּם Ezekiel 24:11 1 pers. once אֵיתַם for אֵתַם Psalms 19:14 plur. יִתְּמוּ Deuteronomy 34:8.
(1) to complete, to finish, Psalms 64:7 followed by לְ to leave off, Joshua 3:17, 4:1, 11 Joshua 4:11, 5:8 more often intrans. to be completed, finished, 1 Kings 6:22, 7:22 עַד תֻּמָּם unto their finishing, i.e. wholly, altogether, Deuteronomy 31:24, 30 Deuteronomy 31:30. (Arab. تَمَّ id. The primary idea, as I judge, is in shutting up, closing, Germ. abfchließen, abgefchloffen fehn, compare the kindred roots חָתַם, אָטַם and the same primary idea in the syn. כָּלָה.)
(2) to be finished, ended, especially used of time, Genesis 47:18 (initio). Psalms 102:28, שְׁנוֹתֶיךָ לֹא יִתָּמוּ “thy years shall have no end;” Ezekiel 47:12, וְלֹא יִתּוֹם פִּרְיוֹ “whose fruit shall never cease.”
(3) to be consumed, spent, i.q. כָּלָה No. 3, Genesis 47:18 to be come to an end, Numbers 32:13, עַד־תֹּם כָּל־הַדּוֹר “until all that generation was consumed;” Joshua 5:6; Jeremiah 27:8 עַד־תֻּמּוֹ 1 Kings 14:10, and עַד תֻּמָּם Deuteronomy 2:15; Joshua 8:24, until they were destroyed, i.q. עַד־כַּלֵּה; see כִּלָּה No. 3.
(4) to be complete.
(a) in number, 1 Samuel 16:11, הֲתַמּוּ הַנְּעָרִים “are all the children here?” Nu. 17:28.
(b) in mind, heart, to be upright, Psalms 19:14 compare תָּם, תָּמִים.
Niphal, only in fut. pl. יִתַּמּוּ to be consumed, i.q. Kal No. 3, Numbers 14:35; Psalms 104:35; Jeremiah 14:15.
Hiphil הֵתֵם (once inf. הֲתִימְךָ for הֲתִמְּךָ Isaiah 33:1), fut. יַתֵּם.
(1), i.q. Kal No. 1, but only causat. to complete, to perfect, e.g. flesh (i.e. to cook completely), Ezekiel 24:10 counsel, 2 Samuel 20:18.
(2) to finish, to leave off; Isaiah 33:1, כַּהֲתִימְךָ שֹׁדְד “when thou ceasest to be a spoiler.” Causat. to cause to leave off, followed by מִן to remove from any one, Ezekiel 22:15.
(3) to make whole, to complete.
(a) a number, Daniel 8:23, כְּהָתֵם הַפּשְׁעִים “when sinners shall have completed,” sc. the number of their sins. Daniel 9:24 קרי; hence, to pay out (money), i.q. שׁלֵּם 2 Kings 22:4.
(b) used of a way, manner of life; Job 22:3, כִּי תַתֵּם דְּרָכֶיךָ “if thou live uprightly.”
Hithpael, הִתַּמֵּם to act uprightly with any one, followed by עִם Psalms 18:26.
