צָרַר to press, to compress (kindred to the root צוּר), hence
(1) to bind up, to bind together (Arab. صَرَّ), followed by בְּ to wrap up in a cloth or bundle, Exodus 12:34; Job 26:8; Isaiah 8:16; Proverbs 30:4. Metaph. 1 Samuel 25:29, “the life of my lord shall be bound up in the bundle of the living with God,” i.e. shall be under the protection of God. But in another sense, Hosea 13:12, “the iniquity of Ephraim is bound up,” i.e. reserved for him against the day of vengeance; comp. Job 14:17 whence צְרֹר.
(2) to lay hold of, Hosea 4:19.
(3) to shut up, 2 Samuel 20:3.
(4) to oppress, to persecute, to treat in a hostile manner (Arab. ضَرَّ), followed by an acc. Numbers 33:55 Isai. 11:13 followed by a dat. Numbers 25:18. Part. צֹרֵר i.q. צַר an adversary, Psalms 6:8, 7:5 23:5 Isaiah 11:13. Also, to rival, to be jealous of (Arab. ضَمَّ Conj. III). Levit. 18:18.
(5) intrans. to be pressed, straitened, distressed. In this sense is used the monosyllabic pret. צַר (otherwise צָרַר) f. צָרָה Isaiah 49:20. Impers. צַר לִי strait is to me, i.e.
(a) I am in distress, Psalms 31:10, 69:18 Judges 11:7.
(b) I am in anguish, in a strait, 1 Samuel 28:15; 2 Samuel 24:14.
(c) followed by עַל I mourn on account of something, 2 Samuel 1:26. In the same connection is used the fut. וַיֵּצֶר לִי, see יָצַר No. II.
Pual, part. מְצֹרָר bound together, Joshua 9:4.
Hiphil הֵצַר, inf. הָצֵר, fut. יָצַר 1 Kings 8:37, to press upon, Jeremiah 10:18 to besiege, Deuteronomy 28:52; 1 Kings 8:37 to bring into distress, to afflict, to vex, Nehem. 9:27. To the active signification are also rightly referred
(a) 2 Chronicles 28:22, בְּעֵת הַצֵר לוֹ “in the time when they distressed him.” 2 Chronicles 33:12, and
(b) אִשָּׁה מְצֵרָה a parturient woman (pr. pressing upon the fœtus), Jeremiah 48:41, 49:22.
