Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

נָגַף fut. יִגֹּף.

(1)  to smite, especially used of Jehovah striking men with some plague, Ex. 7:27 especially with a fatal plague, with sickness, or death, 1 Samuel 25:38; Psalms 89:24; 2 Chronicles 21:18. In another sense God is said to smite a people before their enemies, i.e. to permit them to be smitten by their enemies, 1 Samuel 4:3, “why hath Jehovah smitten us to-day before the Philistines?” Judges 20:35; 2 Chronicles 13:15, 21:14 compare Niphal.

(2) to push, e.g. as horned cattle, Exodus 21:35 as man against man, Exodus 21:22.

(3) to strike against (with the foot), Proverbs 3:23; Psalms 91:12.

Niphal נִגַּף to be smitten, defeated (as an army), Judges 20:36; 1 Samuel 4:10 commonly followed by לִפֳנֵי to be smitten (and flee) before an enemy, Leviticus 26:17; Deuteronomy 28:7; Judges 20:36; 1 Samuel 4:2; 2 Samuel 8:17, etc.

Hithpael, i.q. Kal No. 3, to strike against (used of the foot), Jeremiah 13:16.
