Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

יָשַׁע unused in Kal, Arab. وَسِعَ to be spacious, ample, broad, figuratively to be opulent, kindred to שׁוּעַ. See Jeuhari in A. Schultens, Origg. Heb. tom. i. p. 20. The signification of ample space is in Hebrew applied to liberty, deliverance from dangers and distresses (compare רָחַב, רָוַח), as on the other hand narrowness of space is frequently used of distresses and dangers (comp. צוּר, צָרָה). Hence

Hiphil הוֹשִׁיעַ fut. יוֹשִׁיעַ, the ה rarely retained יְהוֹשִׁיעַ Psalms 116:6, apoc. יוֹשַׁע, וַיּוֹשַׁע.

(1) to set free, to preserve, followed by מִן Psalms 7:2, 34:7 44:8 מִיַּד Judges 2:16, 18 Judges 2:18, 3:31 6:14, 15 Judges 6:15, 31 Judges 6:31, 36 Judges 6:36.

(2) to aid, to succour. Const. absol. Isaiah 45:20 followed by an acc. Exodus 2:17; 2 Samuel 10:19 and לְ Joshua 10:6; Ezekiel 34:22 most commonly used of God giving help to men, followed by an acc. Psalms 3:8, 6:5 31:17 by a dative, Psalms 72:4, 86:16 116:6. As victory depends on the aid of God, it is i.q. to give victory, followed by a dat. Deuteronomy 20:4; Joshua 22:22; 2 Samuel 8:6, 14 2 Samuel 8:14.-A phrase frequently used is, הוֹשִׁיעָה לִּייָדִי “my own hand has helped me,” [saved me] or, הוֹשִׁיעָה לִּי זְרֹעִי “my own arm has helped me,” i.e. “by my own valour (without the aid of any one) have I gained the victory.” Judges 7:2; Job 40:14; Psalms 98:1.- Psalms 44:4; Isaiah 59:16, 63:5. In another sense and construction, 1 Samuel 25:26, הוֹשֵׁעַ יָדְֽךָ לְךָ “to help thyself with thy own hand,” i.e. to take private vengeance, 1 Samuel 25:33. יָדְֽךָ and יָדִי 1 Samuel 25:33, is the accusative of instrument which is also elsewhere coupled with this verb (Psalms 17:13); with regard to which see Heb. Gramm. ed. 10, § 135, 1, note 3.

Niphal

(1) to be freed, preserved, followed by מִן Numbers 10:9; Psalms 33:16.

(2) to be helped, Isaiah 30:16, 45:17 to be safe, Psalms 80:4, Psalms 80:8 also to conquer, [Is it not saved in the alleged passage?] Deuteronomy 33:29. Part. נוֹשָׁע conqueror, Zechariah 9:9 [In this passage of course it refers to Christ as bestowing salvation]; Psalms 33:16.
