1. hearken or give ear to one, ὡς ἔφατ'· οὐδ' ἐσάκουσε.. Ὀδυσσεύς Il. 8.97, cf. Hdt. 4.133, al.: c. acc., φωνὴν ἐσάκουσαν h.Cer. 284, cf. E. Hec. 559, etc.: c. gen. pers., S. Aj. 789; τῶν ἐμῶν λόγων E. IA 1368: c. dat. pers., Hdt. 1.214, etc.; τινί τι Id. 9.60; give way, yield to a request, Th. 1.126, 3.4; of God, τινός or τῆς προσευχῆς LXX Psalms 4:2, etc.: so in Pass., of the prayer, Luke 1:13; of the person, Matthew 6:7.

2. in Poets, simply, hear, τούτου λέγοντος εἰσήκουσ' ἐγώ, ὡς.. S. Tr. 351; τίνος βροτῶν λόγον τόνδ' εἰ.; Id. El. 884, cf. Aj. 318, Axiop. 1.12; ζῶντ' εἰσακούσας παῖδα E. El. 416.

3. perceive, feel effect of, τοῦ ἐγκεφάλου ἐσακούσαντος τοῦ τρώματος Hp. Prorrh. 2.14.

II Pass. in strict sense, ἔξωθεν εἰς τὰς οἰκίας εἰσακούεται μᾶλλον ἢ ἔσωθεν ἔξω Arist. Pr. 903b13 (v.l. εἴσω ἀκ.).

Thayer's Expanded Definition

εἰσακούω: future εἰσακούσομαι; passive, 1 aorist ἐισηκουσθην; 1 future ἐισακουσθήσομαι; the Sept. very often for שָׁמַע , but also for עָנָה to answer; in (Greek writings from Homer Il. 8, 97 down; to hearken unto, to give ear to; i. e.

1. to give heed to, comply with, admonition; to obey (Latinobedio, i. e.ob-audio): τίνος, 1 Corinthians 14:21 (Deuteronomy 1:43; Deuteronomy 9:23; Sir. 3:6, etc.).

2. to listen to, assent to, a request; passive to be heard, to have one's request granted;

a. of persons offering up prayers to God: Hebrews 5:7 (on which see ἀπό, I. 3 d. at the end); Matthew 6:7.

b. of the prayers offered up: Luke 1:13; Acts 10:31 (Psalm 4:2; Sir. 31:29 (Sir. 34:26), etc.).

(a) to obey: 1 Corinthians 14:21 (cf. Deuteronomy 1:43, Sirach 3:6);

(b) to listen, assent to; pass., to be heard: of persons praying, Matthew 6:7, Hebrews 5:7; of the prayer offered, Luke 1:13, Acts 10:31 (cf. Psalms 4:2, Sirach 34:26); v. Cremer, 624).†
