(1) to think, to meditate. (Arab. حَسَبَ, Syr. ܚܫܰܒ, Eth. ሐሰበ፡ and ሐዘበ፡ id. The primary idea seems to be that of computing, reckoning, see Piel No. 1; hence, to reckon with; unless perhaps it be that of mixing, like Arab. خشب and اشب, whence חשֵׁב a weaver in coloured figures, properly, one mixing threads and colours). Isaiah 10:7; Genesis 50:20. Followed by an acc. i.q. to think out, to invent, to compose, as songs [music], Amos 6:5 artificial work (compare חִשָּׁבוֹן), Exodus 31:4 whence חשֵׁב an artificer, 2 Chronicles 26:15 especially polymitarius, a weaver of damask adorned with figures (different from רֹקֵם) Exodus 26:1, 31 Exodus 26:31, 28:6 35:35 36:8 39:8. More frequently used in a bad sense; to devise evil, to plot, as חָשַׁב אָוֶן, ח׳ מְזִמָּה Psalms 10:2, 21:12 35:20 36:5 52:4 חָשַׁב רָעָה עַל Genesis 50:20; Micah 2:3; Nahum 1:11 חָשַׁב מַחֲשָׁבוֹת עַל (against some one), Jeremiah 11:19, 18:11, 18 Jeremiah 18:18 followed by אֶל Jeremiah 49:20, 50:45 followed by a gerund, to think, to purpose to do something, Psalms 140:5; 1 Samuel 18:25; Jeremiah 18:8, 26:3 36:3 Job 6:26; Esther 9:24 (where there is added עַל of the person).
(2) to think, to take to be so and so, followed by acc. and dat. (λογίζεσθαί τινα εἰς τι). Genesis 38:15, וַיַּחְשְׁבֶהָ לְזוֹנָה “and he thought her (or, took her for) a harlot.” 1 Samuel 1:13; Job 13:24, 19:15 33:10 35:2 41:19, 24 Job 41:24 followed by an acc. and כְּ Job 19:11. Absol. to make much account of, to esteem, to prize (achten for hochachten). Isaiah 13:17, אֲשֶׁר כֶּסֶף לֹא יַחְשֹׁבוּ “who do not regard silver.” Isaiah 33:8, 53:3 Malachi 3:16.
(3) to impute something to some one; followed by לְ of pers. and acc. of the thing; e.g. sin, Psalms 32:2; 2 Samuel 19:20 a good deed, [which was not any work at all, but simply his believing God], Genesis 15:6.
Niphal
(1) pass. of Piel No. 1, to be computed, reckoned, 2 Kings 22:7 to be accounted, followed by לְ to, Joshua 13:3 עַל 2 Samuel 4:2.
(2) pass. of Kal No. 2, to be taken for,-followed by an acc. Proverbs 17:28, “even a fool while he is silent חָכָם יֵחָשֵׁב is counted wise.” Genesis 31:15; Isaiah 40:15. Followed by כְּ to be reckoned equal to some one, Job 18:3, 41:21 Hosea 8:12 (hence to be like, Isaiah 5:28); followed by לְ id. 1 Kings 10:21; Lamentations 4:2. בְּ Isaiah 2:22, בַּמֶּה נֶחְשָׁב הוּא “to what shall he be made equal,” i.e. at how much is he to be estimated? followed by עִם Psalms 88:5.

Piel
(1) to compute, to reckon; (as to the primary signification of roots being very often preserved in Piel, see Lehrg. p. 242); with acc. (etwas berechnen, ausrechnen) Leviticus 25:27, 50 Leviticus 25:50, 52 Leviticus 25:52, 27:18, 23 Leviticus 27:23, אֵת (אִתּ) to reckon with any, 2 Kings 12:16.
(2) to consider, to think upon (bedenken), Psalms 77:6, 119:59.
(3) to think, to meditate, i.q. Kal No. 1, absol. Psalms 73:16 followed by an acc. to think out, Proverbs 16:9 in a bad sense, to devise, to plot, followed by עַל of pers. חִשַּׁב מַחֲשָׁבוֹת עַל Daniel 11:24 אֶל of pers. Nahum 1:9; Hosea 7:15. Metaph. of inanimate things, to be as though it were- Jonah 1:4, “the ship was as though it would be broken.”
Hithpael reflex. i.q. Niphal No. 1, to reckon one’s self with. Numbers 24:9.
