הָרַג fut. יַהֲרֹג to kill
(a) persons, used not only of private homicide (for which רָצַח is more frequently used), Genesis 4:8, seq.; Exodus 3:14, but also of the slaughter of enemies in war, Isaiah 10:4, 14:20 Joshua 10:11, 13:22 also of any slaying, 1 Kings 19:10, seq.; 2 Kings 11:18; Esther 9:6 whether by the sword, Exodus 23:23; 2 Samuel 12:9; Amos 4:10 or by throwing a stone, Judges 9:54. Hence it is applied also to a pestilence, Jeremiah 18:21.; to a viper, Job 20:16 and even poet. to grief, Job 5:2.
(b) to kill animals, Isaiah 27:1 hence to slay for food, Isaiah 22:13. Metaph. (c) it is applied even to plants. Psalms 78:47, יַהֲרֹג בַּבָּרָד גַּפְנָם “he killed their vines with hail.” Comp. מוּת Job 14:8, and the observations on that word, Virg. Georg. iv. 330; felices interfice messes. Constr. commonly with acc., rarely followed by לְ 2 Samuel 3:30; Job 5:2 and followed by בְּ, to make a slaughter amongst, 2 Chronicles 28:9; Psalms 78:31. Comp. בְּ A. 2.
