Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

אָרַג fut. יֶאֱרֹג (Isaiah 59:5), תַּאַרְגִי (Judges 16:13 ).

(1)  to plait, Jud. loc. cit.

(2) to weave, ex. gr. used of the spider (hence Gr. ἀράχνη), Isaiah 59:5. Part. אוֹרֵג one weaving, Isaiah 19:9, and subst. a weaver, Exodus 28:32; Isaiah 38:12. מְנוֹר אֹרְגִים a weavers’ beam, 1 Samuel 17:7.

The primary syllable of this root is רג, which had the power of swift motion and agitation, comp. رَجَّ to move, to agitate; رجرج to be agitated; II. to be moved hither and thither; Heb. רָגַז, רָגַע, Sanscr. rag, to move; and in the western languages regere, fich regen. Cognate is the syllable רַע, as to which see below in its place.
