VM 21 (v.l. for ἀφαιρέοντας); make away with a person, Hdt. 3.126, X. Mem. 1.2.53, Th. 4.80; μή μ' ἀφανίσῃ λαβών Men. a. to snatch out of sight, to put out of view, to make unseen (Xenophon, an. 3, 4, 8 ἥλιον νεφέλη παρακαλύψασα ἠφανισε namely, τήν πόλιν, Plato, Phil. 66 a. ἀφανιζοντες κρύπτομεν).
b. to cause to vanish away, to destroy, consume: Matthew 6:19f (often so in Greek writings and the Sept. (cf. Buttmann, § 130, 5)); passive to perish: Acts 13:41 (Luth.vor Schrecken vergehen); to vanish away, James 4:14 (Herodotus 7, 6; 167; Plato and following).
c. to deprive of lustre, render unsightly; to disfigure: τό πρόσωπον, Matthew 6:16.

For the ordinary sense cf. (e.g.) BGU I. 38.12 πάντα ἠφάνισται . For the later meaning ";disfigure,"; ";destroy,"; cf. P Oxy IX. 1220.20 (iii/A.D.) οὐδὲν ἠφάνισεν ὁ ἱπποποτάμις , ";the hippopotamus has destroyed nothing,"; P Ryl II. 152.14 (A.D. 42) κατενέμησαν καὶ κατέφαγαν καὶ τοῖς ὅλοις ἠφάνισαν ";overran, cropped, and utterly destroyed [my pasturage]"; (Edd.), and P Lond 413.14 f. (c. A.D. 346) (= II p. 302) a request for nets since the gazelles were ";spoiling"; the writer’s crops—ἐπιδὴ τὰ δορκάδι [α ] ἀφανίζουσειν τὸ (l. τὰ ) σπόριμα . A near parallel to Matthew 6:16 is afforded by the Christian hymn P Amh I. 2.3 (iv/A.D.) Γάμον ἤλυθες βασιλῆος , Γάμον . . .. : .. ἵνα μή σ᾽ ἀφανίσῃς ";Thou hast come to the marriage of the King, the marriage . . . that thou mayst not disfigure thy face."; In a fragment of a Gnostic Gospel of early iv/A.D., P Oxy VIII. 1081.25 ff., the Saviour in answer to the disciples’ question, ";How then can we find faith?"; is represented as replying διελθο ̣[ῦσιν ἐκ τῶν ] ἀφανῶν κα [ὶ εἰ ]ς τ ̣ο ̣̣ [φῶ ]ς τῶν φαινο [μέ ]νων , ";if ye pass from the things that are hidden,"; etc. (Ed.)
In Kaibel 376.8 (Aezani, ii/A.D.) the verb is used of the ";defacing"; of a relief, ὅστις νεκρὰν πρόσοψιν ἀφανίσει τέκνου : cf. ib. 531.2 (Thrace) μου τὸ κάλλος ἠφάνισ [ε ]ν (presumably Death is the subject). In 492.3 (Thebes, i/B.C.or A.D.) Fortune ἠφάνισε a young athlete. A British Museum papyrus printed in Archiv vi. p. 102 (A.D. 114–5) has (l..7) μετέδωκέν μοι . . τὰ ἐν αὐτῇ (sc. the record office) βιβλία ἀφαν [ί ]ζεσθαι , τὰ δὲ πλεῖστα καὶ ἀνεύρετα εἶναι : the present tense suits best the meaning ";are being ruined.";
