Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

חוּשׁ [“Once חִישׁ Psalms 71:12 (כ׳).”]

(1)  to make haste (Arab. حاش Med. Ye, to flee with alarm. This root is onomatopoetic, as though imitating the sound of very hasty motion; like the German hufchen, transit. hafchen; also, haften, Haft, heßen. Kindred roots are, Arab. هَزَّ to move, to agitate, to excite to speed, hiffen, heßen; هزهز id.; هزع to agitate; intrans. to be swift; حشى to fear; Heb. חָסָה to flee, to flee for refuge; עוּשׁ, עוּז, عاذ, which see). Constr.

(a) absol. 1 Samuel 20:38 also, in the sense of, to come quickly, to approach, Deuteronomy 32:35.

(b) followed by a gerund, to make haste to do something, Psalms 119:60; Habakkuk 1:8 also with a noun in the dative, Psalms 22:20, לְעֶזְרָתִי חוּשָׁה “make haste for my help.” Psa. 38:23 40:14 70:2 71:12 and in the same sense with dative of pers. Ps. 70:6, אֱלֹהִים חוּשָׁה לִי “O God, make haste unto me.” Psalms 141:1. Part. pass. (with an active signification), hasty, quick, alert, Numbers 32:17.

(2) Used figuratively of violent internal emotion. Job 20:2, בַּעֲבוּר חוּשִׁי בִי “on account of my hasting within me,” i.e. of the emotion by which I am moved. Hence

(3) used of the passions of the mind, pleasures and lusts. Ecclesiastes 2:25, מִי יֹאכֵל וּמִי יָחוּשׁ “who eats, who makes haste?” i.e. enjoys the pleasures of life. (In the Mishnah it is not unfrequently used in speaking of the sensations of joy and sorrow. Syr. ܚܳܫ and ܚܰܫ to feel, to perceive; ܚܰܫܐܳ a passion of the mind; ܚܘܽܬܚܬܳܐܳ lust; Arabic حَسَّ to feel, whence حَسُّ and the kindred word حَاشَّةُ; Ethiop. ሕዋስ፡ sense, feeling.)

Hiphil

(1) to hasten, accelerate, Isaiah 5:19, 60:22 Psalms 55:9.

(2) i.q. Kal, to make haste, Judges 20:37.

(3) to flee quickly [“just as on the contrary words of fleeing are applied to haste, see נוּס ”], Isaiah 28:16.
