קַיִץ m.
(1) harvest (pr. cutting off) of fruits, from the root קוּץ No. III, i.q. קָצַץ Isaiah 16:9, 28:4 also, fruits, ripe fruit, especially apparently the fig, Jeremiah 40:10, 12 Jeremiah 40:12; Amos 8:1, 2 Samuel 16:1. Comp. Faber on Harmer’s Observations, vol. i, page 387, seq. Hence
(2) summer, as being the time of the year when fruits are gathered (compare חֹרֶף); Arab. قَيْظُ, Genesis 8:22 Psal. 74:17. Secondary is the Arab. قاظ to be hot, used of the day in the middle of summer.
