אָמֵץ fut. יֶאֱמַץ, to be alert, firm, strong (kindred to חָמַץ, חָמַם to be eager); prop. of the alertness of the feet, rüftig, rafch auf den füßen fehn, to be strong in the feet, swift-footed (compare Piel No. 1, אָמֹץ and the Arabic use); figuratively used of an alert and strenuous mind, opp. to כָּרַע (to have the knees sinking, to be cast down in mind), 2 Chronicles 13:18. Followed by מִן to prevail over any one, Genesis 25:23; Psalms 18:18, 142:7. חֲזַק וֶאֱמַץ “be strong and alert,” i.e. of a strong and undaunted mind, Deuteronomy 31:7, 23 Deuteronomy 31:23 -Josh. 1:618. (Arab. أَبَصَ to be alert, nimble, used of a horse; whence أَبُرصُ, אָמֹץ a nimble horse.)
Piel אִמֵּץ
(1) to make strong, prop. failing feet, Job 4:4; Isaiah 35:3. Hence, to make the mind active and strong, Deuteronomy 3:28; Job 16:5.
(2) to strengthen, Isaiah 41:10; Psalms 89:22; 2 Chronicles 11:17; Proverbs 31:17, 24:5.
(3) to restore, to repair a building, i.q. חִוֵק 2 Chronicles 24:13 also, to set up, to build, Proverbs 8:28.
(4) to harden (the heart), Deuteronomy 2:30, 15:7 2 Chronicles 36:13.
(5) to appoint, to choose. Psalms 80:18, “(whom) thou hast chosen for thyself,” comp. verse 16 Psalms 80:16; Isaiah 44:14.
Hiphil intrans. to be strong, used of the mind, Psalms 27:14, 31:25.
Hithpael.
(1) to be alert, followed by a gerund; to do anything speedily, 1 Kings 12:18; 2 Chronicles 10:18.
(2) to strengthen oneself, used of conspirators, 2 Chronicles 13:7.
(3) to harden oneself, i.e. to be of a fixed mind, Ruth 1:18. Compare חִזַּק.
