יָסַף in Kal and Hiph. fut. יוסִיף, apoc. יוֹסֵף, conv. וַיֹּסֶף (fut. Kal unused), inf. הוֹסִיף; part. יוֹסִף for יוֹסֵף (Isaiah 29:14, 38:5 ), and מוֹסִיף Nehemiah 13:18 (compare note).
(1) to add, (Syr. and Chald. Aph. אוֹסֵף, ܐܘܰܣܶܦ). Followed by an accus. of the thing added, and עַל of that to which it is added. Leviticus 5:16, וְאֶת חֲמִישִׁיתוֹ יוֹסֵף עָלָיו “and he shall add a fifth part thereto.” Levit. 22:14 27:13, seq.; Deuteronomy 19:9 followed by אֶל 2 Samuel 24:3. The accusative of the thing to be added is however often omitted, Deuteronomy 13:1, לֹא־תֹסֵף עָלָיו וְלֹא תִגְרַע מִמֶּנּוּ “neither add thereto nor take therefrom (any thing whatever).” Proverbs 30:6; Ecclesiastes 3:14.
Hence
(2) to add (something) to-, i.e. to increase any thing, comp. the Fr. ajouter à, and Lat. detrahere (aliquid) de laudibus alic. Followed by עַל Psalms 71:14, וְהוֹסַפְתִּי עַל־כָּל־תְּהִלָּתֶךָ “and I will add to (increase) all thy praise.” Psalms 115:14; Ezra 10:10 followed by אֶל Ezekiel 23:14 followed by לְ Isai. 26:15 followed by an acc. Leviticus 19:25. Job 42:10, וַיֹּסֶף יְהוֹה אֶת־כָּל־אֲשֶׁר לְאִיּוֹב לְמִשְׁנֶה “and Jehovah increased twofold all things which Job had.” Ecclesiastes 1:18; Proverbs 1:5, 9:9 10:27 16:21 19:4 Job 17:9; Isaiah 29:19. To increase any thing to any one sometimes means i.q. to give more, plentifully. Psalms 120:3, מַה־יִּתֵּן לְךָ וּמַה־יּוֹסִיף לָךְ לָשׁוֹן רְמִיָּת “what shall one give to thee, or what shall one increase to thee, O deceitful tongue?” compare Leviticus 26:21; Ezekiel 5:16. Elsewhere to increase, is i.q. to surpass. 2 Chronicles 9:6, יָסַפְתָּ עַל הַשְּׁמוּעָה “thou hast increased the fame,” i.e. thou hast surpassed the fame, comp. 1 Kings 10:7.
(3) To add to do anything, followed by an inf. either naked or else with לְ prefixed, more rarely with a finite verb, (the copula either added or omitted, Proverbs 23:35; Isaiah 52:1; Hosea 1:6) is
(a) to do again, and in Latin [or other language which resembles it in this particular] it is commonly expressed by an adverb, iterum, rursus. Genesis 4:2, וַתֹּסֶף לָלֶדֶת “and she bare again.” Genesis 8:10, 12 18:29, וַיֹּסֶף עוֹד לְדַבֵּר “and he spoke yet again.” Genesis 25:1; Exodus 10:28, 29 Exodus 10:29.
(b) to do something afterwards, to continue to do anything, to do it any longer. Genesis 4:12, לֹא־תֹסֵף תֵּת־כֹּחָהּ לָךְ “(the earth) shall no more yield to thee her strength.” Numbers 32:15; Joshua 7:12; 1 Samuel 19:8, 27:4 Isaiah 47:1, Isaiah 47:5.
(c) to do more. Genesis 37:5, וַיּוֹסִיפוּ עוֹד שְׂנא אֹתוֹ “and they hated him yet more;” 37:8. 1 Samuel 18:29; 2 Samuel 3:34.-Sometimes the action which is either to be repeated or continued, is omitted, and is only to be gathered from what precedes. Job 20:9, עַיִן שְׁזָפַתּוּ וְלֹא תוֹסִיף “the eye has seen him, but it shall not add,” sc. לִשְׁזֹף i.e. shall see no more. Job 34:32, “if I have sinned, I will not continue,” sc. to sin. Job 38:11, 40:5, 32 Job 40:32. Exodus 11:6, “such as never was before וְכָמֹהוּ לֹא־תֹסִיף (sc. לִהְיוֹת) neither afterwards will there be.” Numbers 11:25, “and when the Spirit came upon them they prophesied וְלֹא יָסָֽפוּ (sc. לְהִתְנַבֵּא) but (from that day) never any more,” as is well rendered by the LXX. and Syr.
Note. In the future for יוֹסֵף there is sometimes written יאֹסֵף. Exodus 5:7; 1 Samuel 18:29 and on the contrary יוֹסֵף, יֹסֵף Psalms 104:29; 2 Samuel 6:1, for יאֹסֵף from אָסַף. For the imp. there occurs twice סְפוּ, but this is more correctly referred to the root סָפָה.
Niphal נוֹסַף
(1) to be added, followed by עַל Numbers 36:3, Numbers 36:4, reflect. to join one’s self, Exodus 1:10.
(2) to be increased, sc. in wealth. Proverbs 11:24. Part. נֹוסָפוֹת Isaiah 15:9, additions, increases, sc. of calamities, i.e. new calamities.
Derived pr.n. יוֹסֵף, יְהוֹסֵף, יוֹסִפְיָה.
