Vocabulary of the Greek NT

For this verb in connexion with leading out from prison, as in Acts 16:39, cf. P Tebt I. 15.13 (B.C. 114) ἔφησαν. . . τὸν μὲν Ἀπολλόδωρον ἐξηγμένον, τοῦ δὲ Μάρωνος ἐν ἑρκτεῖ (l. εἱρκτῆι) γεγονότων (l.ος), ";they informed us that Apollo-dorus had escaped, but Maron had been put in prison,"; so ib..22 ὡς ἧν ἐξηγμένος : the pf. part. act. ἐξαγηγοχότα (for form, see s.v. ἄγω) is found in P Hib I. 34.10 (B.C. 243–2). The meaning ";conduct,"; ";carry out"; to the end appears in Michel 409.18 (beg. iii/B.C.) τὰ ἐπιτραπέντα αὐτοῖ ]ς ἐξα [γ ]αγόντας με [χρὶ τέλους. The verb is very common in custom-house receipts = ";export,"; e.g. P Ryl II. 197.2 (late ii/A.D.) Σαραπίων ἐξάγ (ων) ἐπὶ καμήλ () α ̄ μιᾷ λαχανοσπέρμ (ου) ἀρτάβ (ας) ἕξ, ";S. exporting on one camel six artabae of vegetable-seed"; : cf. PSI IV. 406.13 (iii/B.C.) ἄλλην (παιδίσκην) ἐξήτοσαν ἐξ Ἀμμώνων, and the use of the subst. in P Lille I. 29.14 (iii/B.C.) μηθενὶ ἐξέστω σώματα πωλεῖν [ἐπ᾽ ἐξαγωγῆι, ";that no one be permitted to sell slaves for exportation,"; P Oxy XII. 1440.3 (A.D. 120) receipt for tax on articles exported—ἐξακοκῆς (l. ἐξαγωγῆς). It may be noted that Ἐξαγωγή was used by Philo as the title for the second book of the Law, instead of Ἔξοδος : see Nestle in Hastings’ DB iv. p. 442. In the Rainer Gospel Fragment, which contains a narrative somewhat similar to Mk 14.26-.30, Bickell’s later reading is—μετὰ δὲ τὸ φαγεῖν, ὡς ἐξ ἔθους, instead of ὡς ἐξῆγον : see Mittheilungen aus der Sammlung der Papyrus Erzherzog Rainer i. p. 53 ff., ii. p. 41 f.
