b. in measurements of distance, ׳כִּבְרַת הָא the space or distance of country (see כּברה) Genesis 35:16, so ׳כִּבְרַת א some distance Genesis 48:7; 2 Kings 5:19.

אֶרֶץ comm. (more rarely masc., as Genesis 13:6; Isaiah 9:18, especially when a land is put for the inhabitants, Isaiah 26:18, 66:8 ). with suff. אַרְצִי, with art. הָאָרֶץ, with ה local אַ֫רְצָה the earth. (Arab. أَرْضُ, Ch. and Syr. אַרְעָא, ܐܰܪܥܳܐ. The Arabic form nearly resembled the Sanscr. dhara [Welsh, daear], Pehlev. arta, whence terra, Goth. airtha, earth, Grde; the latter passes over to the Gr. ἔρα, by casting away d, as in the vulgar Gre. To this also answers the Grz, œs, œris, see No. 6).
Specially
(1) the earth, orbis terrarum, opp. to heaven. הַשָּׁמַיִם וְהָאָרֶץ Genesis 1:1, 2:1,, and אֶרֶץ וְשָׁמַיִם Genesis 2:4, “heaven and earth,” used of the whole creation. Synecd. for the inhabitants of the earth, Genesis 9:19, 11:1 19:31.
(2) earth, land, continent, opp. to sea, Genesis 1:28.
(3) a land, country, Exodus 3:8, 13:5 אֶרֶץ פְּלִשְׁתִּים Genesis 21:32 אֶרֶץ יְהוּדָה Ruth 1:7. Any one’s land is that which is subject to any one, as “the land of Sidon,” Nehemiah 9:22 or which is consecrated (Jeremiah 2:7, 16:18 ); also that in which any one dwells, Deuteronomy 19:2, 10 Deuteronomy 19:10, 28:12 or was born, “his native land,” Genesis 24:4, 30:25 Numbers 10:9; Isaiah 8:9 comp. γῆ τινος, Acts 7:3, and the words עַם, עִיר, אִישׁ. Absol. אֶרֶץ and הָאָרֶץ are not unfrequently used of Palestine, κατʼ ἐξοχήν, Joel 1:2, as in the phrase שָׁכַן אֶרֶץ, יָרַשׁ Psalms 37:9, 11 Psalms 37:11, 22 Psalms 37:22, 29 Psalms 37:29, 44:4 Proverbs 2:21, 10:30. Also used of the inhabitants of a region, Isaiah 26:18 specially of the wicked, Isaiah 11:4 (compare אֱנוֹשׁ No. 1, b).
(4) land, piece of land (Germ. ein Stück Land), Genesis 23:15; Exodus 23:10. Used of the land belonging to a town, Joshua 8:1.
(5) the ground, with ה local אַרְצָה (Milêl) to the ground, as וַיִּשְׁתַּחוּ אַרְצָה Genesis 33:3, 37:10. Hence poet., things that creep on the ground, i.q. רֶמֶשׂ הָאָרֶץ. Job 12:8, שִׂיחַ לָאָרֶץ. “speak to the ground,” i.e. to the reptiles of the ground; followed by fishes of the sea; compare Genesis 9:2; 1 Kings 5:13.
(6) the element of the earth, earthy part, scoriœ (of metal); Psalms 12:7, “silver purified in a workshop לָאָרֶץ from its earthy parts,” i.e. scoriœ.
Pl. אֲרָצוֹת lands, countries, Genesis 26:3, Genesis 26:4, הָאֲרָצוֹת lands; often used, especially in the later Hebrew, κατʼ ἐξοχὴν of the lands of the Gentiles (comp. אִיִּים, גּוֹיִם), e.g. עַמֵּי הָאֲרָצוֹת “the people of (profane) lands.” 2 Chronicles 13:9, 17:10 מַמְלְכוֹת הָאֲרָצוֹת “kingdoms of regions (of Gentiles).” 1 Chronicles 29:30; 2 Chronicles 12:8, 17:10. The origin of this phraseology is to be found in these passages of Ezekiel, 5:6 11:17 12:15 20:23 22:15 20:32 22:4.
Note.-ה paragogic in אַרְצָה is commonly local, but sometimes also poetical, so that אַרְצָה is not different from אֶרֶץ, Job 34:13, 37:12 Isa. 8:23 (comp. לַיְלָה for לַיִל).
