עָנַשׁ fut. יַעֲנשׁ to fine, to impose a fine, to amerce. (Found besides only in the Rabbinic dialect. The primary idea appears to be that of imposing, laying upon; compare cogn. עָמַס, עָמַשׂ). Construed followed by לְ Proverbs 17:26 followed by two acc. to amerce any one in a sum of money, Deuteronomy 22:19; 2 Chronicles 36:3 (used of sums of money exacted in war); in wine, Amos 2:8. Impers. Proverbs 21:11, בַּעֲנָשׁ־לֵץ “when they (the judges) amerce the scoffer.”
