II. [עָנַן] verb Po`. practice soothsaying (probably denominative, but original meaning dubious; connection with I. עָנָן (De Isaiah 2:6) now Generally abandoned; Löw ZMG xxxi (1877), 539 compare עַיִן eye, so We Skizzen iii. 148 (but see below); RS JPhil xiv (1885), 119f. compare Arabic nasal twang, hum of insects, whence diviners as crooning; Ew Gerber31of diviner as interpreting hum of insects, whisper of leaves, etc.; We Heid. 2,204now compare appear, i. e. dealers in phenomena); — Perfect 3 masculine singular consecutive וְעוֺנֵן 2 Kings 21:6 2 Chronicles 33:6; Imperfect 2 masculine plural וְלֹא תְעוֺנֵ֑נוּ Leviticus 19:26 (H); Participle as substantive מְעוֺנֵן Deuteronomy 18:10 (forbidden), plural מְעֹנְנִים Deuteronomy 18:14, ׳מְעוֺ Micah 5:11, אֵלוֺן מְעוֺנְנִים Judges 9:37 (see I. אֵלוֺן; seat of an oracle, compare RS Sem i. 179 2nd ed. 196); also (without מְ, compare Sta§ 233 Kö i. 349) עֹנְנִים Isaiah 2:6, suffix עֹנְנֵיכֶם Jeremiah 27:9; feminine singular in בְּנֵיעֹנְנָה Isaiah 57:3 sons of a soothsaying woman, figurative of apostates. — see כִּשֵּׁף, II. [נָחַשׁ], [קָסַם].
עָנַן not used in Kal, prop. to cover, like the kindred verbs גָּנַן, כָּנַן; whence עָנָן a cloud.
Piel (denom. from עָנָן) to gather clouds, Genesis 9:14.
Poel עֹונֵן, fut. יְעֹונֵן (Leviticus 19:26), part. מְעֹונֵן, once f. עֹנְנָה (for מְעֹונְנָה, although also it may be Kal), to act covertly; hence to use hidden arts, i.e. magic, to practise sorcery (compare the roots לוּט, לָהַט, and Syr. ܐܪܐܙܝܢ mysteries; hence magical arts), Deuteronomy 18:10, 14 Deuteronomy 18:14; 2 Kings 21:6; Isaiah 2:6, 57:3 Micah 5:11. Many of the ancients understood by it a particular kind of divination. LXX. κληδονίζομαι. Vulg. observans somnia, elsewhere augurans, divinans. Syr. fascinating with the eyes (as if עֹונֵן were from עַיִן); but it seems rather to be a general name.
