Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

אָנַס to urge, to compel, to press, to force; kindred roots are אָלַץ, אוּץ, which see. Once found, Esther 1:8, אֵין אֹונֵס “none did compel” the guests to drink. (This root occurs much more frequently in Targg. Heb. גָּזַל, רָצַץ, עָשַׁק; Syr. Ethpe. ܐܶܬܶܐܢܶܣ to be compelled. Pa. ܐܰܢܶܣ for ἐκβιάζομαι, Sap. 14:19.
