יָבֵשׁ fut. יִיבַשׁ, pl. יִבָשׁוּ inf. constr. יְבוֹשׁ, יְבשֶׁת Genesis 8:7, to be dried up, to be or become dry; used of plants, trees, grass, Isaiah 15:6, 19:7 40:7, Isaiah 40:8; Joel 1:12 of tilled fields, Jeremiah 23:10; Isaiah 27:11; Ezekiel 17:9 of the earth, Genesis 8:14 of bones void of marrow, Ezekiel 37:11 of a withered hand, 1 Kings 13:4 (comp. Mark 3:1); hence, of vital strength, Psalms 22:16, יָבֵשׁ כַּחֶרֶשׂ כֹּחִי “my strengthis dried up like a potsherd.” Moisture itself is said also to dry up; hence it is used of rivers and the sea, Job 14:11; Genesis 8:14; Joel 1:20. (Arab. يَبِسَ id.) As to its difference from הָרֵב to be dry, see under that word.
Piel יִבֵּשׁ to dry, to make dry, Job 15:30; Proverbs 17:22; Nahum 1:4 (where וַיַבְּשֵׁהוּ is for וַיְיַבְּשֵׁהוּ).
Hiphil הוֹבִישּׁ
(1) to dry, to make dry, Joshua 2:10, 4:23.
(2) intransit. to become dry, used of plants, fruits, the harvest, Joel 1:10, 12 Joel 1:12, 17 Joel 1:17 and metaph. ver. 12 Joel 1:12, “joy is dried up (i.e. has perished) from the children of men.”
II. יָבַשׁ Hiphil הוֹבִישׁ, with a signification taken from that of בּוֹשׁ
(1) to put to shame, 2 Samuel 19:6.
(2) intrans, i.q. בּוֹשׁ in Kal, to be ashamed, to be put to shame, made to blush, Jeremiah 2:26, 6:15 8:12 especially used of a person whose hope has failed, JoeI 1:11 Jeremiah 10:14; Zechariah 9:5 poet. of cities overthrown (compare the Germ. zu Schanden werden), Jeremiah 48:1, 20 Jeremiah 48:20, 50:2, Jeremiah 50:3.
(3) to do shameful things, to act basely, Hosea 2:7.
