עֵת followed by Makk. עֶת with suff. עִתִּי, pl. עִתִּים and עִתּוֹת (contr. from עֶדֶת, from the masc. עַד, root עָדָה, compare לַת for לֶדֶת), fem. (Joshua 11:6; Jeremiah 51:33 but masc. Song of Solomon 2:12 from the true derivation of the word having often been overlooked even by the ancients, Lehrg. 474) time. Specially
(a) a fit, or proper time, an opportunity, like καιρός. Ecclesiastes 10:17, “O happy land, whose princes כָּעֵת יאֹכֵלוּ take food at the proper time.” לֹא עֵת before the (proper) time, prematurely, Job 22:16. With suff. בְּעִתּוֹ in its time, Proverbs 15:23; Ecclesiastes 3:11 בְּעִתָּהּ Isaiah 60:22.
(b) a certain time, as having a limit, opposed to eternity. Ecclesiastes 3:1, 17, עֵת לְכָל חֵפֶץ “to every thing there is a time”, it lasts but for a time, nothing is perpetual; compare Ecclesiastes 8:6.
(c) a longer time, acc. עֵת long, Hosea 13:13 Arabic زَمَانًا id.
(d) a happy time, happiness, Psalms 81:16. More often in a bad sense
(e) an unhappy time, calamity, as in Lat. tempora; compare יום No. 1, letter b; Arabic زَصَانُ, Syriac ܥܶܕܳܢܐܳ time both happy and fatal. Isaiah 13:22; Jeremiah 27:7; Ezekiel 30:3; Ecclesiastes 9:11, 12.
With prefixes
(a) כָּעֵת (for כְּהָעֵת), i.e. at this time, now, Judges 13:23, 21:22 Job 39:18 (see כְּ letter B, 3 ). כְּעֵת מִנְחַת עֶרֶב at the time of the evening sacrifice, Daniel 9:21 כָּעֵת חַיָּה with the reviving time [i.e. coming year], see חַי No. 3 כָּעֵת מָחָר tomorrow at this time (of the day), (see מָחָר ), Exodus 9:18; 1 Samuel 9:16; 1 Kings 19:2, 20:6 2 Kings 7:1, 18 2 Kings 7:18, 10:6 (others incorrectly take it as, about the time of to-morrow, i.e. to-morrow, as if it had been כְּעֵת מָחָר).
(b) בְּכָל־עֵת at every time, every season, Psalms 10:5, 34:2 62:9 בָּעֵת הַהוּא at this time, Deuteronomy 1:9.
(c) לְעֵת עֶרֶב at the time of evening, at evening, Genesis 8:11 also in acc. עֵת at (this) time, zur Zeit, i.e. now, i.q. עַתָּה, Ezekiel 27:34. LXX. νῦν. Vulg. nunc.
Plur. עִתִּים and עִתּוֹת
(a) times. Esther 1:13, יֹדעֵי עִתִּים and 1 Chronicles 12:32, יֹדְעֵי בִינָה לָעִתִּים those who know the times, astrologers.
(b) the vicissitudes of things, events, Psalms 31:16; 1 Chronicles 29:30; Job 24:1.
(c) Nehemiah 9:28, עִתִּים רַבּוֹת many times, repeatedly; compare Aram. ܐܒܰܢ time; plur. vices; English, times.
