Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

עָרָה to be naked; not used in Kal. Arabic عَرِىَ id. The primary idea appears to be that of plucking out (compare אָרָה) plants, hairs, etc.; hence to bare, bald, devoid of plants and trees; compare מַעֲרֶה, תַּעַר. Kindred roots are עָרַם and perhaps עָרַף No. II.

Piel עֵרָה, fut. conv. וַתְּעַר

(1) to make naked, to uncover, e.g. pudenda, Isaiah 3:17, a shield (on which there had been a covering), Isai. 22:6 Zephaniah 2:14, אַרְזָה עֵרָה “he uncovers the cedar work,” makes the walls naked by removing the cedar wainscotting.

(2) to lay naked (the foundation of a house), i.e. to overthrow a house, Psal. 137:7. Inf. עָרוֹת Habakkuk 3:13. (Compare גָּלָה, גִּלָּה Ezekiel 13:14; Micah 1:6.) Hence

(3) to empty a vessel, to pour it out (in doing which its bottom is laid bare), Genesis 24:20; 2 Chronicles 24:11. Psalms 141:8, אַל תְּעַר נַפְשִׁי “pour not out my soul,” i.e. pour not out my blood. Compare Hiph. No. 2.

Hiphil

(1) to make naked, to uncover, e.g. pudenda, Leviticus 20:18, 19 Leviticus 20:19.

(2) to pour out. Isaiah 53:12, הֶעֱרָה לַמָּוֶת נַפְשׁוֹ “he hath poured out his soul unto death,” he delivered himself to death. (Arab. أَسَالَ نَفْسَةُ to pour out, i.e. to give up one’s life or soul; Syr. ܢܰܦܫܶܗ ܫܕܳܐ, Gr. παραβάλλεσθαι, whence parabolanus).

Niphal, pass. of Hiph. No. 2, to be poured out, Isaiah 32:15.

Hithpael

(1) to make oneself naked, to uncover oneself, Lamentations 4:21.

(2) to pour oneself out, to spread oneself (used of a wide spreading tree), Psalms 37:35.

Derived nouns, עָרָה, עֶרְוָה, עֶרְיָה, מַעַר, מַעֲרֶה, תַּעַר and pr.n. מַעֲרָת.

עָרָה plur. עָרוֹת f., Isaiah 19:7 a naked or bare place; i.e. destitute of trees (see מַעַר, מַעֲרֶה ); here used of the grassy places on the banks of the Nile.
