The nomadic agriculturist carefully watches over his livestock and crops by keeping a close eye on them. עָנִי f. עֲנִיָּה plur. עֲנִיִּים, עֲנִיִּיִ adj.

(1)  afflicted, wretched, poor, often with the added idea of piety, Exodus 22:24; Deuteronomy 24:12; Psalms 10:2, Psalms 10:9, 14:6 18:28.

(2) meek, mild, comp. עָנָי No. 2, Zechariah 9:9.

Plur. עֲנִיִּים is often in קרי, where כתיב has עֲנָוִים Psalms 9:19; Isaiah 32:7.
