The Hebrews recognized the east as the top of the four compass points (contrary to our understanding of north) and is the direction faced when orienting direction. The past is understood as what is in front, or before, you as the past is known (contrary to our understanding of the future being in front of us) . [from: md- the red color blood combined with the quph as the rising sun, hence the "rising sun of blood"]

1 (apart from Ezekiel) East, especially ׳רוּחַ (הַ)קּ wind of the East, east wind, often as violent and scorching, from desert on southeast, = Arabic sirocco ( eastern), compare Dr Amos 4:9: Exodus 10:13 (twice in verse) (JE), Exodus 14:21 (J), Jeremiah 18:17 (simile), Jonah 4:8; Psalm 48:8; also ׳ק (רוּחַ omitted) = east wind Genesis 41:6,23,27 (E), Hosea 12:2; Hosea 13:15; Isaiah 27:8; Job 15:2; Job 27:21; Job 38:24; Psalm 78:26. — קָדִימָה Habakkuk 1:9 is dubious, usually eastward, i.e. forward, but text probably corrupt, compare We Now Daniel , GASm proposes מַקְדִּים (see also [מְגַמָּה] p. 169 above). 2 in Ezekiel (52t.):
a. b.קָדִ֫ימָה = East: ׳דֶּרֶךְ הַקּ Ezekiel 40:6; גְּבוּל קָדִימָה Ezekiel 45:7; Ezekiel 48:21 (+ west); מְּאַתקָדִימָה Ezekiel 47:18, + west Ezekiel 48:3 8t., + north, south, west, Ezekiel 48:32.
