Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

עָנַן not used in Kal, prop. to cover, like the kindred verbs גָּנַן, כָּנַן; whence עָנָן a cloud.

Piel (denom. from עָנָן) to gather clouds, Genesis 9:14.

Poel עֹונֵן, fut. יְעֹונֵן (Leviticus 19:26), part. מְעֹונֵן, once f. עֹנְנָה (for מְעֹונְנָה, although also it may be Kal), to act covertly; hence to use hidden arts, i.e. magic, to practise sorcery (compare the roots לוּט, לָהַט, and Syr. ܐܪܐܙܝܢ mysteries; hence magical arts), Deuteronomy 18:10, 14 Deuteronomy 18:14; 2 Kings 21:6; Isaiah 2:6, 57:3 Micah 5:11. Many of the ancients understood by it a particular kind of divination. LXX. κληδονίζομαι. Vulg. observans somnia, elsewhere augurans, divinans. Syr. fascinating with the eyes (as if עֹונֵן were from עַיִן); but it seems rather to be a general name.
