1308) un (נתה NTh) AC: Spread CO: Squash AB: ?: The pictograph n is a picture of a seed, the u is a picture of a basket. Combined these mean "seed basket". Squash seeds were planted along the routes of the travelers and nomads for future use by themselves and other travelers. The squash plant spreads out over a large area forming varied sizes and shapes of squash fruit. Dried squash fruit becomes a hard hollow shell (באסכת basket) with the seeds inside and when shaken they rattle inside.

נָטָה fut. יִטֶּה, apoc. יֵט, וַיֵּט, וַיֶּט־.
(1) to stretch out, to extend (Arab. نطا to stretch out threads; cognate words are נָתַח, מָתַח, לָתַח which see).
(a) to stretch out, to extend (ausftrecken), e.g. the hand, Exodus 8:2, 13 10:12, 21 Exodus 10:21 often used of the hand of God in threatening, Jeremiah 51:25; Ezekiel 6:14, 14:9, 13 Ezekiel 14:13; Isaiah 5:25 or of a man assailing God, Job 15:25 also a spear, Joshua 8:18 a measuring line (followed by עַל, die Meßfchnur an etwas legen), Job 38:5; Isaiah 44:13; Lamentations 2:8 an ambush, a metaphor taken from nets, Psalms 21:12 also, to extend, to elongate (ausdehnen), to draw out by extending; Isaiah 3:16, נְטוּיוֹת גָּרוֹן “with a stretched out (or an erect) neck;” Psalms 102:12, צֵל נָטוּי “an elongated shadow;” i.e. having become longer at evening; comp. Psalms 109:23.
(b) to stretch, to unfold (ausbreiten ausfpannen), e.g. a tent, Genesis 12:8, 26:25, heaven; Isaiah 40:22, הַנּוֹטֶה כַדֹּק שָׁמַיִם “who spreadeth out the heaven as a curtain;” 1 Chronicles 21:10, שָׁלוֹשׁ אֲנִי נֹטֶה עָלֶיךָ “I spread out to thee three things,” i.e. I propose them to thee, choose one; compare 2 Samuel 24:12 (where for נוֹטֶה there is נוֹטֵל).
(c) intrans. to spread selves out (e.g. flocks of any one in a land), Job 15:29.
(2) to incline, to bow, e.g. the shoulder, Genesis 49:15 the heart, Psalms 119:12 the heaven (spoken of God), Psalms 18:10 to cast down (enemies), Psalms 17:11. Part. pass., Psalms 62:4, קִיר נָטוּי “a wall inclined,” ready to fall; intrans. used of feet inclining, ready to fall, Psalms 73:2 of the day as declining, Judges 19:8 of the shadow of a dial moving downwards, 2 Kings 20:10.
(3) to turn, to turn away, to turn to one side, Isaiah 66:12, “behold I will turn peace upon her as a river.” Genesis 39:21, וַיֵּט אֵלָיו חֶסֶד “and he turned mercy upon him,” i.e. conciliated favour to him; more often intrans. Numbers 20:17, 22:23 26:33 followed by אֶל (to some one), Genesis 38:16 followed by מִן and מֵעִם from any thing (as from a way), Psalms 44:19, 119:51, 157 Psalms 119:157; Job 31:7; 1 Kings 11:9 followed by אַחֲרֵי to turn on any one’s side or part, Exodus 23:2; Judges 9:3; 1 Kings 2:28 comp. 1 Samuel 8:3. Hence
(4) to go away, 1 Samuel 14:7.
Niphal, pass. of Kal No. 1, to be stretched out (as a measuring line), Zechariah 1:16 to spread itself (a river), Numbers 24:6 to elongate itself (the shadow of the evening), Jeremiah 6:4 compare Virg. Ecl., i. 84.

(2) to incline (downwards), Genesis 24:14; Psalms 144:5 (God bowing the heavens); specially, the ear, Jeremiah 7:24, 26 11:8 followed by לְ to some one, Psalms 17:6, 31:3 71:2 78:1 116:2 Proverbs 4:20, 5:1.
(3) to turn, to turn away, to turn (to one side), i.q. Kal No. 3, Numbers 22:23; 2 Samuel 3:27 as
(a) any one’s heart, 2 Samuel 19:15 followed by אֶל, לְ to any one, to wisdom, 1 Kings 8:58; Proverbs 2:2, 21:1 Psalms 119:36, 141:4 followed by אַחֲרֵי 1 Kings 11:2 in a bad sense, to seduce, Proverbs 7:21; Isaiah 44:20.
(b) הִטָּה חֶסֶד עַל פּ׳ to turn favour to some one, i.e. to conciliate favour for him, Ezra 7:28, 9:9 compare Kal, Genesis 39:21.
(c) to turn aside, i.e. to avert evil, Jeremiah 5:25.
(d) intens. to push out of the way, Job 24:4 comp. Amos 2:7.
(e) to repel, (to give refusal to a petitioner), Psalms 27:9.
(f) intrans. to deflect, to decline, Job 23:11; Isaiah 30:11; Psalms 125:5.
(g) הִטָּה מִשְׁפָּט 1 Samuel 8:3 and followed by gen., Exodus 23:6; Deuteronomy 27:19; Lamentations 3:35, to turn aside any one’s right in judgment; without the noun, Exodus 23:2, לִנְטֹת אַחֲרֵי רַבִּים לְהַטֹּת “to follow many to turn aside,” i.e. wrest (judgment); also followed by an acc. of pers., to turn any one aside, i.e. to turn aside his right; Proverbs 18:5; Isaiah 10:2, 29:21 Amos 5:12.
