1. shut out from, c.gen., ἐ. ἄλλον ἄλλοσε στέγης E.l.c.: Pass., to be shut out, Id. HF 330.

2. metaph., shut out, exclude from, πόλιν τῆς μετοχῆς Hdt. 1.144; τῆς συμμαχίας, τῶν ὅρκων, Aeschin. 2.85, 3.74: c. acc. et inf., ἐξέκλειον λόγου τυγχάνειν τοὺς ἄλλους D. 19.26.

3. hinder, prevent, τῷ καιρῷ τὴν κατηγορίαν Plb. 18.8.2; τὴν θήραν D.S. 3.16: Pass., ἐκκληϊόμενοι τῇ ὥρῃ being prevented by [want of] time, Hdt. 1.31; ἐκκλεισθεὶς ὑπὸ τῶν καιρῶν D.S. 18.3: c. inf., ἐ. ποιεῖν τι Id. 4.32, cf. Arist. MM 1198b16.

4. shut off, cut off, ζωῆς ὁδούς Opp. C. 2.342.

Thayer's Expanded Definition

ἐκκλείω: 1 aorist infinitive ἐκκλεῖσαι; 1 aorist passive ἐξεκλείσθην; (from (Herodotus) Euripides down); to shut out: Galatians 4:17 (viz. from contact with me and with teachers cooperating with me); equivalent to to turn out of doors: to prevent the approach of one, passive in Romans 3:27.
