Lys. 734: Hsch. has the form ἦσεν· εἴασεν, cf. ἦσαι· παῦσαι ]: —

1. suffer, permit, c. acc. pers. et inf., τούσδε δ' ἔα φθινύθειν leave them alone to perish, Il. 2.346; αἴ κεν ἐᾷ με.. ζώειν Od. 13.359, etc.; ἐᾶν οἰκεῖν Th. 3.48, cf. IG 12.1; ἐ. τοὺς Ἕλληνας αὐτονόμους ib.2.17.9; ἐᾶν ἄκλαυτον, ἄταφον S. Ant. 29, cf. Tr. 1083; ἐᾶν τί τινι Plu. 2.233d: — so in Pass., Κρέοντί γε θρόνους ἐᾶσθαι should be given up, S. OC 368. concede, allow in argument, c. acc. et inf., Pl. Prm. 135b.
2. with neg., οὐκ ἐᾶν not to suffer: hence, forbid, prevent, τρεῖν μ' οὐκ ἐᾷ Παλλὰς Ἀθήνη Il. 5.256; εἴπερ γὰρ φθονέω τε καὶ οὐκ εἰῶ διαπέρσαι 4.55; esp. of the law, Aeschin. 3.21; δμωὰς δ' οὐκ εἴας προβλωσκέμεν Od. 19.25, etc.: used elliptically with ἀλλά following, οὐκ ἐῶν φεύγειν, ἀλλὰ [κελεύων] μένοντας ἐπικρατέειν Hdt. 7.104, cf. Th. 2.21; also, persuade or advise not to do.., Id. 1.133: an inf. may freq. be supplied, οὐκ ἐάσει σε τοῦτο will not allow thee [to do] this, S. Ant. 538; κἂν μηδεὶς ἐᾷ even if all men forbid, Id. Aj. 1184, cf. Ph. 444: — so in Pass., οὐκ ἐᾶσθαι, c. inf., to be hindered, E. IT 1344, Th. 1.142, D. 2.16.

Hdt. 6.108, etc.; ἐάσωμεν ἕκηλον αὐτόν S. Ph. 825; [ πρᾶγμα] ἀκάθαρτον ἐᾶν Id. OT 256; τὰ παθήματα.. παρεῖσ' ἐάσω Id. OC 363, cf. Th. 2.36; ἐᾶν φιλοσοφίαν Pl. 1. to allow, permit, let: followed by the infinitive, οὐκ ἄν εἴασε διορυγῆναι (T Tr WH διορυχθῆναι), Matthew 24:43; by the accusative of the person and the infinitive, Luke 4:41 (οὐκ εἴα αὐτά λαλεῖν); Acts 14:16; Acts 23:32; Acts 27:32; Acts 28:4; 1 Corinthians 10:13; by the accusative alone, when the infinitive is easily supplied from the context, οὐκ εἴασεν αὐτούς, namely, πορευθῆναι, Acts 16:7; οὐκ εἴων αὐτόν, namely, εἰσελθεῖν, Acts 19:30; (cf. Winer's Grammar, 476 (444)].
2. τινα, to suffer one to do what he wishes, not to restrain, to let alone: Revelation 2:20 Rec.; Acts 5:38 R G; ἐᾶτε namely, αὐτούς, is spoken by Christ to the apostles, meaning, 'do not resist them, let them alone,' (the following ἕως τούτου is to be separated from what precedes; (others connect the words closely, and render 'suffer them to go even to this extreme'; but cf. Meyer at the passage, Weiss edition)), Luke 22:51.
3. To give up, let go, leave: τάς ἀγκύρας ... εἴων εἰς τήν θάλασσαν, they let down into the sea (i. e., abandoned; cf. B. D. American edition, p. 3009{a} bottom), Acts 27:40. (Compare: προσεάω.)

For ἐάω followed by the inf. cf. P Grad 8.16 (B.C. 223–2?) καλῶς ποιήσεις γράψας τοῖς φυλακίταις ἐᾶν αὐτοῖς κατανέμειν, ";to allow them to use the pastures,"; P Fay 122.6 (c. A.D. 100) ἐά [σ ]ας αὐτὸν βαστάξαι ἀρτάβας εἴκοσι ὀκτώ, τὰς δὲ λοιπὰς ὑπὸ τὴν ἀμφοτέρ [ω ]ν σφραγεῖδα ἐάσας, ";allowing him to carry off 28 artabae and leaving the rest under the seals of you both"; (Edd.) : see also Proleg. p. 205. In P Tebt II. 289.6 (A.D. 23) we have the participle, οὕτως γὰρ γνώσομαι πότερον ἐπὶ τόπων σε ἐάσω πράττοντά τι, ";for I shall thus know whether I shall leave you in employment where you are"; (Edd.). In P Oxy X. 1293.19 ff. (A.D. 117–38), as in Acts 16:7; Acts 19:30, an inf. has to be supplied—λέγει μοι Σαρᾶς Ἔασον τοὺς ἄλλους πέντε μετρητὰς περὶ ὧν γράφεις εἰς τὸ ἄλλο ἀγώγιον · ἐὰν δὲ μὴ εὕρω τὸν βαστάζοντα, ἐάσω αὐτό, ";Saras says to me, ‘Let the other five metretae about which you write wait for the other load, and if I cannot find a carrier, I shall do so’ "; (Edd.) : see also P Flor II. 213.7 (A.D. 255) ἔασον παρά σοι, ";keep by you"; certain memphitia of wine. For ἐάω = ";leave,"; as on its second occurrence in P Fay l.c. above, see also P Tebt II. 319.24 (A.D. 248) εἰακέναι δὲ αὐτοὺς κοινὰς τὰς ὑπαρχούσας (ἀρούρας) β ̄ οὔσας περὶ κώμην Τεπτῦνιν, ";they have left as common property the two arourae belonging to them near the village of Tebtunis."; In P Par 63.162 (B.C. 165) (= P Petr III. p. 32) καὶ μηθεὶς ἐαθῆι στρατεύσασθαι, Mahaffy translates, as required by the context, ";and if no one be let off to serve in the army.";
