Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

יָרֵךְ const. יֶרֶךְ with suff. יְרֵכִי f. (Numbers 5:21); dual יְרֵכַיִם.

(1) the thigh, perhaps so called from softness (see the root), Gr. μηρός. (Arab. وَركَُ thigh, haunch, buttocks.) Wherein it differs from מָתְנַיִם the loins, ὀσφύς, is seen both from the words, Exodus 28:42, “make for them linen breeches to cover their nakedness מִמָּתְנַיִם וְעַד יְרֵכַיִם from the loins even to the thighs,” and also from the general use of the word. For thus מָתְנַיִם signifies the lower part of the back, יָרֵךְ dual יְרֵכַיִם the double thick and fleshy member extending from the bottom of the spine to the legs (שׁוֹקַיִם) i.e. the two thighs with the buttocks. כַּף הַיָּרֵךְ the socket of the thigh, where the thigh is joined to the pelvis, Genesis 32:26, 33 Ge3 2:33. On the thigh (עַל יָרֵךְ) soldiers wore their swords, Exodus 32:27; Judges 3:16, 21 Judges 3:21; Psalms 45:4 men smote their thigh in mourning and indignation, Jeremiah 31:19; Ezekiel 21:17 (compare Iliad xii. 162; xv. 397; Od. xiii. 198; Cic. cl. Orat. 80; Quinctil. xi. 3), those who swore put the hand under the thigh; Genesis 24:2, Genesis 24:9, 47:29 to have come forth from the thigh of any one, is to be descended from him, Genesis 46:26; Exodus 1:5; Judges 8:30 (comp. Kor. Sur. iv. 27; vi. 98). The buttocks are to be understood, Numbers 5:21, 27 in animals, the thigh, the haunch (Keule, Schinken), Ezekiel 24:4.

(2) Figuratively applied to inanimate things (in which sense however the feminine form יַרְכָּה is more used; [query, the existence of such a form, see Thes.]), it is

(a) that part of the holy candlestick in which the shaft (קָנֶה) divided into three branches, Exodus 25:31, 37:17.

(b) the side of a tent, Exodus 40:22, 24 Exodus 40:24 of the altar, Leviticus 1:11; 2 Kings 16:14.

Dual יְרֵכַיִם both thighs, Exodus 28:42 (see above), Song of Solomon 7:2.
