Piel יִסַּר, fut. יְיַסֵּר, inf. also יַסְּרָה Leviticus 26:18, יסּוֹר Psalms 118:18.
(1) to correct by blows or stripes, to chastise, Deuteronomy 22:18. 1 Kings 12:11, 14 1 Kings 12:14, “my father chastised you with whips;” especially used of children who are corrected by their parents, Proverbs 19:18, 29:17 of men corrected by God, Levit. 26:18, 28 Leviticus 26:28; Psalms 6:2, 38:2 39:12 118:18 Jeremiah 2:19, 10:24. (Eth. ገሠረ፡ to correct, to reprove, to instruct; the palatal י being changed into the harsher ג.)
(2) to correct by words; hence
(a) to admonish, to exhort, Proverbs 9:7; Job 4:3 (comp. Hosea 7:15). Psalms 16:7, אַף־לֵילוֹת יִסְּרוּנִי כִלְיוֹתָֽי “also by night my reins admonish me,” to praise God. Followed by מִן to dissuade from anything, Isaiah 8:11. Often used of the discipline which children receive from their parents, Deuteronomy 21:18 or men from God, Deuteronomy 4:36, 8:5 Psalms 94:12.
(b) to instruct, to teach. Isa. 28:26, יִסְּרוֹ לַמּשְׁפָּט אֱלֹהָיו יוֹרֶנּוּ “he will instruct him according to the right, his God will teach him.” Followed by two acc. Proverbs 31:1.-Often joined with the synonymous word הוֹכִיחַ, which differs from this verb in applying primarily to the milder discipline of admonition and reproof, and being thence transferred to the more severe as that of stripes and punishment;-this verb, on the other hand, properly signifies the more severe discipline, and is transferred to that which is milder. Like the former is Gr. παιδεύειν, Germ. züchtigen (from Zucht, ziehen, erziehen), like the latter is Heb. לָמַד.

Niphal נוֹסַר to be corrected, to be admonished, to receive discipline, Psalms 2:10; Jeremiah 6:8; Proverbs 29:19; Ezekiel 23:48.-נִוַּסְּרוּ Eze. loc. cit. is Nithpael (see Lehrg. p. 249) for נִתְוַסְּרוּ. The common analogy is however preserved, if the word be written with other vowels, נוֹסְרוּ.
