Vocabulary of the Greek NT

κυριεύω is construed with gen. of obj., as in Luke 22:25 etc., in such passages as P Par 15.13 (B.C. 120) οἰκιῶν, ὧν καὶ τῶν προγόνων μου κεκυριευκότων ἐφ᾽ ὅσον περιῆσαν χρόνον, or P Tebt I.104.15 (B.C. 92), a marriage contract in which provision is made that the wife is to own their property in common with her husband—κυρεύουσαν (l. κυριεύουσαν —but cf. Mayserp. 147) μετ᾽ αὐτοῦ κοινῇ τῶν ὑπαρχόντων αὐτοῖς : cf. also Michel 976.11 (B.C. 300) ὧν τε αὐτὸς ἐκυρίευσεν, ";those things for which he was personally responsible."; P Lond 154.14 (A.D. 68) (= II. p. 179) μηδὲ τοὺς παρ᾽ αὐτοῦ κυριεύοντα [ς αὐτῶν ] . . κ (αὶ) κατασπῶντες shows part. ace. plur. in –ας followed by one in –ες (Thackeray Gr. i. p. 149). In the magic P Lond 121.838 (iii/A.D.) (= I. p. III) the verb is followed by the acc.—τοῦ κυριεύοντος τὴ (ν) ὅλην οἰκουμένην, and in P Eleph 14.14 (Ptol.) the usual constr. with the gen.—τῆς δὲ γῆς κυριεύσει καὶ τῶν καρπῶν —is accompanied by an absol. constr.—.22 κυριεύσουσιν δὲ καθ᾽ ἃ καὶ οἱ πρῶτον κύριοι ἐκέκτηντο. For the same two constructions we may compare the verb with the gen. in Romans 6:9; Romans 6:14 al. and its absol. occurrence in 2 Corinthians 3:17 οὗ δὲ τὸ πνεῦμα κυριεύει, ἐλευθερία according to Bishop Chase’s happy conjectural reading : see JTS xvii. p. 60 ff. On ὁ κυριεύων as the colloquial name for the ";master"; argument, see Epict. ii. 19. I. The subst. κυριεία is found in P Tor I. Iv. 37 (B.C. 116) μηδεμιᾶς κρατήσεως μηδὲ κυριείας τινὸς ἐγγαίου περιγενομένης αὐτῶι, where the editor (p. 152) distinguishes between κράτησις, occupatio, possessio, or ius in re, and κυριεία, dominium, or ius ad rem : for the form κυρεία, as in Daniel 4:19 (Theod.) al., cf. P Amh II. 95i. 6 (A.D. 109) τὴν τ ̣ο ̣υ ̣των κυρ [ε ]ίαν καὶ κράτησιν, P Tebt II. 294.19 (A.D. 146). See also Mayser Gr. pp. 92, 417.
