2. like cross αἰδώς, sense of shame, honour, πᾶσαν αἰ. ἀφείς S. Ph. 120; ἡ γὰρ αἰ. [πάρος] τοῦ ζῆν.. νομίζεται E. Heracl. 200; δι' αἰσχύνης ἔχειν τι to be ashamed of, Id. IT 683; αἰσχύνην ἔχειν τινός for a thing, S. El. 616; αἰ. ἐπί τινι Pl. Smp. 178d; ὑπέρ τινος D. 4.10; joined with δέος, S. Thayer's Expanded Definition

αἰσχύνη, (ης, (cf. αἰσχρός);

1. subjectively, the confusion of one who is ashamed of anything, sense of shame: μετ' αἰσχύνης suffused with shame, Luke 14:9; τά κρυπτά τῆς αἰσχύνης those things which shame conceals, opposed to φανέρωσις τῆς ἀληθείας, 2 Corinthians 4:2 (evil arts of which one ought to be ashamed).

2. objectively, ignominy: visited on one by the wicked, Hebrews 12:2; which ought to arise from guilt, Philippians 3:19 (opposed to δόξα).

3. a thing to be ashamed of: αἰσχύνη τῆς γυμνότητός (genitive of apposition) nakedness to be ashamed of, Revelation 3:18, cf. Revelation 16:15; plural (cf. Winer's Grammar, 176 (166)) αἱ αἰσχύναι basenesses, disgraces, shameful deeds, Jude 1:13. ((Aeschylus, Herodotus, others) Synonym: see αἰδώς, at the end.)

as something to be ashamed of, Revelation 3:18; pl. (Bl., § 32, 6), shameful deeds, Judges 1:13.†

In P Eleph 1.6 (a marriage contract, B.C. 311–10) ( = Selections, p. 2) provision is made that if the bride κακοτεχνοῦσα ἁλίσκηται ἐπὶ αἰσχύνηι τοῦ ἀνδρός, ";shall be detected doing anything wrong to the shame of her husband,"; he shall be entitled to take certain steps against her : cf. P Genesis 21:11 (ii/B.C.) (as completed, Archiv iii. p. 388) μηδ᾽ αἰ [σ ]χύνειν Μενεκράτην ὅσα φέρει ἀνδρὶ αἰσχύνην —the same formula in P Tebt I. 104.30 (B.C. 92). So P Par 47.25 (c. B.C. 153) ( = Selections, p. 23) ὑπὸ τῆς αἰσχύνης, ";for very shame,"; P Oxy III. 471.78 (ii/A.D.) ἅπαξ γὰρ ἐν ἔθει τῆς α [ἰσ ]χύνης γενόμενον, ";for when once accustomed to his shame.";
