נַחֲלָה f.
(1) taking possession, occupation of any thing, Isaiah 17:11, בְּיוֹם נַחֲלָה “in the day of occupation,” of occupying the harvest, [“but on account of the following words, the reading נַחְלָה wound, is to be preferred; see חָלָה Niphal”]; also, possession, domain, Numbers 18:21. Often used of the territory in the Holy Land assigned to the respective tribes, e.g. Joshua 13:23, נַחֲלַת בְּנֵי רְאוּבֵן “the possession of the Reubenites;” Numbers 18:23, 26:62 27:7 also used of the whole of the Holy Land which was given to the Israelites, Deuteronomy 4:21. נַחֲלַת יְהוָֹה is
(a) the especial possession of Jehovah, i.e. Israel, for whom Jehovah cared and watched as being his own, Deuteronomy 4:20, 9:26, 29 Psal. 28:9.
(b) a possession granted by Jehovah, the gift of Jehovah, Psalms 127:3. As to the phrase יֵשׁ לי חֵלֶק וְנַחֲלָה בְּ, see חֵלֶק No. 2,.
(2) inheritance, 1 Kings 21:3, 1 Kings 21:4. Proverbs 19:14, נַחֲלַת אָבוֹת “an inheritance received from fathers.”
(3) a lot assigned by God, i.q. חֵלֶק No. 2, Job 20:29, 27:13 31:2.
