מִלְחָמָה f. once מִלְחֶמֶת 1 Samuel 13:22 with suff. מִלְחַמְתּוֹ, plur. מִלְחָמוֹת (from the root לָחַם No. 2).
(1) pr. inf. or abstract verbal noun; to fight, a fighting. Isaiah 7:1, לַמִּלְחָמָה עָלֶיהָ “to fight against it” (the city), to besiege it. Hence battle, Exodus 13:17; Job 39:25.
(2) war, עָשָׂה מִלְחָמָה, followed by אֵת (אִתּ) and עִם to wage war against any one, Genesis 14:2; Deuteronomy 20:12, 20 Deuteronomy 20:20. הָֽיְתָה מִלְחָמָה בְּ there was war with any one, 2 Samuel 21:15, 20 2 Samuel 21:20. אִישׁ מִלְחָמָה a warrior, a soldier, Numbers 31:28 אִישׁ מִלְחָמוֹת id. Isaiah 42:13 also an adversary in war, 1 Chronicles 18:10. עַם מִלְחָמָה das Kriegsvolk, army, Joshua 8:1, 11:7. Meton. i.q. כְּלֵי מִלְחָמָה instruments of war, arms, Psalms 76:4 compare Hosea 1:7, 2:20.
(3) victory, the fortune of war (pr. the devouring of enemies), Ecclesiastes 9:11, לֹא לִגִּבֹּרִים מִלְחָמָה “victory (does) not (always happen) to the strong.”
