II. כַּר noun masculine Psalm 65:14 pasture (√ dubious; Thes derives from כַּר lamb (=lamb-pasturage); Schw ZAW x. (1890) 186 from כרה, and compare Assyrian kirû [which however = nursery of trees, grove Dl HWB 353], Arabic cistern; Hom NS 100 from כרר q. v., originally = round enclosure); — singular only כַּד נִדְחָ֑בּ Isaiah 30:23 a roomy pasture; plural כָּרִים Psalm 37:20, הַצּאֹןלָֽבְשׁוּ׳כ Psalm 65:14 the pastures are clothed with the sheep (> Schw l.c. who translates lambs Psalm 37:20 after Aq ᵑ6ᵑ7 and Psalm 65:14, and understands Isaiah 30:23 of a definite plural). —

II. כַּר noun [masculine] Hebrews -lamb, battering-ram (Assyrian kirru, Zim in Schw ZAW x. (1890), 186; perhaps lamb from dancing, skipping, galloping in field; ( battering-) ram as in English, from butting; compare Arabic ram and buttress, Lane; also battering-ram compare Dozy ii. 440); — singular only Isaiah 16:1 the lamb of the ruler (as tribute); elsewhere plural כָּרִים Amos 6:4; 1 Samuel 15:9; 2 Kings 3:4; Jeremiah 51:40 (in simile), Ezekiel 27:21; Ezekiel 39:18; ׳חֵלֶב כ Deuteronomy 32:14 the fat of lambs; ׳דַּם כוְעַתּוּדִים Isaiah 34:6 the blood of lambs and goats; כָּרִים = battering-rams Ezekiel 4:2; Ezekiel 21:27 (twice in verse) (in v a Co reads שָׂרִים, compare AV; ᵑ0 RV as above). — See also בֵּית כָּ֑ר p. כַּר plur. כָּרִים m.
(1) a lamb, especially one that is fattened and well fed (Deuteronomy 32:14; Isaiah 34:6; Ezekiel 39:18); feeding in fertile pastures, so called from its leaping, or skipping (root כָּרַר), Amos 6:4; 1 Samuel 15:9; 2 Kings 3:4; Psalms 37:20; Jeremiah 51:40 Vulg. agnus; Syr. ܡܦܰܛܡܐܳ fattened; Ch. פַּטִּים fat. Collect. Isaiah 16:1, שִׁלְחוּ־כַר מוֹשֵׁל־אֶרֶץ “send ye the lambs of the ruler of the land,” i.e. those which were owed to the king, the lord of the land. Figuratively used
(a) a pasture of lambs, a meadow; Isaiah 30:23. Ps. 65:14, לָֽבְשׁוּ כָרִים הַצּאֹן “the pastures are clothed (adorned) with flocks.”
(b) a battering ram, Gr. κρίος, a warlike engine for breaking through the walls of besieged cities; in Arab. also called كَبْشُ Ezekiel 4:2, 21:27. (The Ionians also adopted this word in the signification of lamb and pasture; Hesych. Κὰρ … πρόβατον. Κάρα … Ἴωνες τὰ πρόβατα. Κάρνος … βόσκημα, πρόβατον. Κάρος … Βόσκημα. Compare Bochart, Hieroz. i. 429.)
(2) כַּר הָגָּמָל Genesis 31:34, a camel’s saddle, with a kind of canopy over it, bound to the back of a camel, in which women were accustomed to ride; so called from its leaping, bounding [jolting] motion, or like currus à currendo (comp. אַפִּרְיוֹן), Arab. كُورُ and مَكْوَرُ, also قَرُّ id. See Jahn’s Bibl. Archæologie, t. i. vol. i. p. 287; Hartmann’s Hebräerin, t. ii. p. 397.
