זָנַח
(1) to stink, to be rancid, to be corrupt, see Hiphil. (So the Arab. زنخ, سنخ. Kindred roots are צָחַן, זָהַם, زِنْقُ turbid or muddy water; and in Greek, τάγγος and ταγγή, rancidity, ταγγός, rancid; also, σικχός, causing loathing, σικχαίνω.)
(2) Metaph. to be abominable. Hosea 8:5, זָנַח עֶגְלֵךְ שֹׁמְרוֹן “O Samaria, thy calf is an abominable thing.” Also transitively, to loathe, to spit out, to reject (comp. זָהַם). Hosea 8:3, זָנַח יִשְׂרָאֵל טוֹב “Israel has rejected that which is good;” often used of Jehovah rejecting a people, Psalms 43:2, לָמָּה זְנַחְתָּנִי “why hast thou cast me off?” Psalms 44:10, 24 Psalms 44:24, 60:3, 12 Psalms 60:12, 74:1 77:8 89:39. Followed by מִן to thrust away from any thing. Lamentations 3:17, וַתִּזְנַח מִשָּׁלוֹם נַפְשִׁי “thou hast thrust me away from peace,” thou hast deprived me of peace, or welfare.
Hiphil
(1) like Kal No. 1, pr. to emit a stench. Isaiah 19:6, הֶאֶזְנִיחוּ נְהָרוֹת “the rivers shall stink,” i.e. they fail and become shallow. LXX. ἐκλείψουσιν οἱ ποταμοί. Vulg. deficient flumina. (The form הֶאֶזְנִיחוּ is scarcely Hebrew, and it seems to have sprung from the coalition of two readings, הִזְנִיחוּ and אֶזְנִיחוּ, the latter being a Chaldaism.)
(2) i.q. Kal No. 2, to reject, to cast away, 1 Chronicles 28:9 followed by מִן 2 Chronicles 11:14 causat. [to render stinking, i.e. to pollute, or] to profane, 2 Chronicles 29:19.
Derivative, זָנוֹחַ pr.n.
