For the literal use of ἐκκόπτω, as in Matthew 3:10, cf. P Fay 113.10 (A.D. 100) ἐξ αὐτον ἐκκόψαι θέλι φυτά, ";he wishes to cut down some of the trees"; (Edd.), and similarly 114.14, P Oxy VI. 892.10 (A.D. 338) ἵνα. . . διὰ ταχέων ταῦτα ἐκκόψας παρενεχθῆναι ποιήσῃς, ";with all speed to get the timber cut and delivered"; (Edd.). See also BGU I. 72.9 (A.D. 191) ἐξέκοψαν πλεῖστον τόπον ἐν ἀρούραις πέντε. The verb is metaph. in Vett.
A parallel to the NT use of ἐνκόπτω, as in 1 Thessalonians 2:18, is afforded by P Alex 4.1 (iii/B.C.) The verb is intrans. in Vett.
