cleave — Qal Perfect בָּֽזְאוּ נהרים Isaiah 18:2,7 whose land rivers cut through (of Cush).
בָּזָא ἅπαξ λεγόμ, no doubt having the sense, to cut in pieces, divide. Isaiah 18:2, “a people … אֲשֶׁר בָּֽזְאוּ נְהָרִים אַרְצוֹ whose land the rivers divide” [or “rend (בָּֽזְאוּ i.q. בָּזְזוּ)”]. It signifies Ethiopia, see my Comment. on the passage. The root בָּזָא is softened from the harder forms בְּזַע (to cleave), בָּצַע, פָּצַע, all of which have the power of dividing. It lies not only in the syllables פץ, בץ, בז (comp. under the root פָּצָה), but also, as imitating the sound of cleaving, in many others ending with a sibilant, as קץ, כס, חץ ;גז, חס, תז ;חז; also in ד, as קט, גד, which latter is frequent in the Indo-Germanic languages; compare Sanscr. bhidh, to cleave, tshid; Pers. tshiden, σχίζω, scindo, etc.
