Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

תּוּר

(1)  to go or travel about (Arab. تار id.; comp. the kindred roots, under the verb דּוּר), either

(a) for the sake of traffic, 1 Kings 10:15 (compare רָכַל, סָחַר), or

(b) for the sake of exploring, hence to spy out, e.g. a country, followed by an acc., Numbers 13:16, 17 Numbers 13:17, 21 Numbers 13:21, 14:6, seq.; also to search out any thing, Deuteronomy 1:33; Numbers 10:33; Ezekiel 20:6. Metaph. to investigate, followed by an acc. Ecclesiastes 7:25 and followed by עַל Ecclesiastes 1:13 followed by a gerund (darauf denken, etwas zu thun, wie man etwas thue). Ecclesiastes 2:3.

(2) followed by אַחֲרֵי to follow, go about after. Metaph. Numbers 15:39.

Hiphil, fut. יָחֵר and in the Rabbin. form יַתֵּר 2 Samuel 22:33

(1) to lead one about, specially to shew him the way in unknown places. (Ch. תַּיָּר conductor of the way.) Followed by an acc. Proverbs 12:26, יָחֵר מֵרֵעֵהוּ צַדִּיק “the righteous shews the way to his friend.” Followed by two acc. of pers. and way. 2 Sa. loc. cit. וַיּתֵּר תָּמִים דַּרְכּוֹ “and (God) shews the upright his way,” he shews an upright man the way in which he should walk. So at least we may explain this passage, as to the interpretation of which interpreters seem to have despaired, in speaking of Psalms 18:33.

(2) to search, explore, Judges 1:23.
