Qal Imperfect 3 masculine singular with apocope (Ges§ 109k) כִי וֵ֫שֶׁל אֱלוֺהַּ נַפְשׁוֺ Job 27:8 (De); < read יָשֹׁל, or יִשּׁל (√ שׁלל) Di; Schnurrer We Siegf Bu Du יִשְׁאַל demandeth; Perles Anal. 48 יִשָּׂא אֶלאֱֿלוֺהַּ.
שָׁלָה and
שָׁלָה i.q. שָׁלַל, נָשַׁל to draw out. Hence many derive fut. apoc. יֵשֶׁל (for יִשְׁלֶה), Job 27:8, כִּי יֵשֶׁל אֱלוֹהַּ נַפְשׁוֹ “when God draws out his soul,” sc. from his body, as if from the sheath of his soul (comp. נִדְנֶה). So Chald. and Syr.; and this opinion may be acceded to. We should not, however, reject Schnurrer’s conjecture, who supposes ישׁל to be contracted for יִשְׁאַל he asks, compare Arab. يَسءَلُ for يَسْأَلُ, although, if this were adopted, we should apparently read יֵשַׁל.
Derivative, שִׁלְיָה.
