Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

אֵשֶׁל (according to Kimchi אֶשֶׁל, with six points), i.q. Arab. أَثْلُ tamarisk, myrica (Tamarix orientalis, Linn.). 1 Samuel 22:6, תַּחַת הָאֵשֶׁל “under a tamarisk tree.” 1 Samuel 31:13 (in the parallel place, 1 Chronicles 10:12, תַּחַת הָאֵלָה “under a terebinth,” or “a tree” generally). Hence, perhaps, any large tree (like אֵלָה, אֵלוֹן), and collect, trees, a grove, Genesis 21:33. A very exact description of the tree اثل is given by J.E. Faber in Fab. et Reiskii Opuscc. Med. ex Monum. Arabum, p. 137; also, Ker Porter’s Travels, ii. 311.
