Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

שָׁאַף

(1)  to breathe hard, to pant (fchnauben), spoken of an enraged person, Isaiah 42:14 of one in haste; hence to hasten, Ecclesiastes 1:5. Compare הֵפִיחַ No. 4. Roots of the same stock are שׁוּף, נָשַׁף, נָשַׁב, שָׁבַב No. I.; and kindred to these is the syllable הַב, אַו, which has the sense both of blowing and desiring. In the Indo-Germanic languages it is found with a sibilant, fchnauben, fchnappen, to snap, with an aspirate, happen (jappen), etc.

(2) to pant after (fchnappen), to catch at with open mouth, as the air, Jeremiah 2:24, 14:6 a shadow, Job 7:2 the night (i.e. death), Job 36:20. Poet. it is ascribed to a noose or trap lying in wait for any one, Job 5:5 (see צַמִּים ). Followed by עַל Amos 2:7, “who pant after the dust of the earth on the head of the poor,” they are urgent that dust may be on the head of the poor, as a mark of oppression or mourning. Elsewhere to pant after any one is i.q. to thirst for his blood, a metaphor taken from wild beasts, Psalms 56:2, Psalms 56:3, 57:4 Amos 8:4; Ezekiel 36:3.
