Hiph`il Imperfect זַיָּרֶבבנחל (for וַיַּאֲרֶב) 1 Samuel 15:5 (compare Dr Kö i. 390; Ges-Kau§ 68. 2queries) but text dubious; compare Ol§ 237b, & Klo, who proposes ויעבר בנחל.
אָרַב fut. יֶאֱרֹב
(1). to knot, to weave, to intertwine, whence אֲרֻבָּה a net, net-work. (Kindred is עָרַב to mingle. Arab. أَرَبَ to tie a knot, II. id., أَرْبَةُ a knot.)
(2) to lie in wait. (Arab. أَرِبَ to be cunning, astute, III. to act cunningly (prop. intricately). Verbs of intertwining, weaving, also of twisting, spinning, are often applied to craftiness and snares, and are opposed to upright and open course of acting. Comp. עָמַר, פָּתַל, Gr. δόλον, μῆτιν ὑφαίνειν, κακά, δόλον ῥάπτειν, nectere insidias, scelera, suere dolos, Germ. Trug fpinnen, anzetteln.) Constr. followed by לְ, Psalms 59:4; Proverbs 24:15; Joshua 8:4 followed by an acc., Proverbs 12:6 עַל Judges 9:34. Elsewhere put absolutely, for to watch in ambush, Judges 9:34, 21:20 followed by a gerund, Pro. loc. cit.; Psalms 10:9.
