Hithpa`el 1. glorify oneself, with עַל person: = boast, Imperfect 3 masculine singular יִתְמָּאֵר Judges 7:2; Isaiah 10:15; as polite address to king, Imperative masculine singular הִתְמָּאֵר Exodus 8:5 (J), assume the honour over me (to decide) when, etc.
2 get glory to oneself, be glorified, by means of (ב), of ׳י, בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל יִתְמָּאָ֑ר Isaiah 44:23, Song of Solomon 1singular אֶתְמָּאָ֑ר Isaiah 49:3; of people [by ׳י], Infinitive construct הִתְמָּאֵר Isaiah 60:21; Isaiah 61:3.
[מֵּאֵר] verb denominative Pi`el go over the boughs; — Imperfect 2 masculine singular תְּפָאֵר Deuteronomy 24:20 thou shalt not go over the boughs after thee (i.e. glean).
פָּאַר not used in Kal, to be beautiful, ornamented, prop. apparently used of the rosiness and heat of the face (see פָּארוּר, פָּרוּר, compare Arab. فَاَر Med. Waw, to boil up, to be hot, فَوْرَةُ glowing heat); hence to be proud (which, in Arabic, is expressed by a hardened guttural, فخر to glory, to boast).
Piel פְּאֵר
(1) to adorn, e.g. the sanctuary, Isaiah 60:7, 13 Isaiah 60:13 the people of God, Isaiah 55:5 to bestow aid upon the poor, Psalms 149:4 (compare ornare beneficiis).
(2) denom, from פֹּארָה to examine the boughs, in order to glean them, Deuteronomy 24:20.
Hithpael
(1) to be adorned, honoured, as a people by Jehovah, Isaiah 60:21, 61:3 to glorify oneself, as God in bestowing favours on his people, followed by בְּ Isaiah 44:23, 49:3.
(2) to boast, followed by עַל against any one, Judges 7:2; Isaiah 10:15.
Derivatives, פְּאֵר, פּאֹרָה, פָּארוּר, תִּפְאֶרֶת [פֻּארָה, פָּארָן].
II.
פָּאַר (kindred to בָּאַר) to dig, to bore, especially in the earth. Arab. فَأَرَ to dig down and hide under the earth. Hence פֵּרָה for פְּאֵרָה (Arab. فَاَرةُ) a mouse, פָּארָן pr.n. of a region abounding in caverns. To this root I refer
Hithpael-הִתְפָּאֵר to explain, to declare oneself (compare significations used figuratively in the same manner under the word בֵּאֵר No, 2, and נָקַב No. 2). Exodus 8:5, הִתְפָּאֵר עָלַי לְמָתַי וגו׳ “declare to me when”, etc.; in which words the particle עַל (of which the sacred writer has made a delicate use) implies a command. Well rendered by the LXX. τάξαι πρός με. Vulg. constitue mihi, quando, etc. But the Hebrews themselves, and many more recent writers, glory over me (in saying) when I shall intreat for thee; and this they explain, I give thee this honour that thou mayest set me a day when, etc.; every one must see that this is very harsh and arbitrary.
