Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

נָהַג fut. יִנְהַג

(1) pr. to pant, especially used of those who are exhausted by running; like the Syr. ܢܗܓ, Arab. نهج (kindred roots are הָגָה, נָאַק, נָהַק, compare Eth. ነሀከ፡ to be anxious, solicitous). See Piel, No. 1.

(2) causat, to urge on in a course, to drive (beasts). 2 Kings 9:20 בִּי בְשִׁגָּעוֹן יִנְהָֽג “for he drives (the horses) as if he were mad,” comes on at a most rapid rate, 2 Kings 4:24 hence נָהַג עֲגָלָה to drive a wagon. 2 Samuel 6:3 followed by בְּ 1 Chronicles 13:7 to lead or drive a flock (as a shepherd), Genesis 31:18; Exodus 3:1 followed by בְּ Isaiah 11:6 to drive away (cattle), Job 24:3 to lead any one, Song of Solomon 8:2 to lead away captives, 1 Samuel 30:2; Isaiah 20:4 Comp. 60:11. (With this signification accord Gr. Lat. ἄγω, ago, ἡγέομαι; Pers. اختن to lead, to bring).

(3) intransit. to act (etwas thun, treiben, handeln). Ecclesiastes 2:3, זְלִבִּי נֹהֵג בַּֽחָכְמָה “and my heart acting with wisdom.” I formerly explained this from the Ch. usage: “and my heart was accustomed to wisdom,” clave to it; but that now given is more simple.

Piel נִהַג, fut. יְנַהֵג

(1) to pant, to sigh; see Kal No. 1, Nahum 2:8.

(2) causat. of Kal No. 2. Exodus 14:25, וַינֲהֲגֵהוּ בִּכְבֵדוּת “and caused to drive heavily.”

(3) i.q. Kal No. 2; to lead, Deuteronomy 4:27, 28:37 to bring to, Exodus 10:13; Psalms 78:26 to lead away, Genesis 31:26.
