 [מַחֲרֵשָׁה, מַחֲרֶ֫שֶׁת] noun feminine ploughshare — singular suffix לִלְטוֺשׁ אִישׁ מַחֲרַשְׁתּוֺ 1 Samuel 8:20 to sharpen each man his ploughshare 1 Samuel 13:20 (+ אֵתוֺ, קַרְדֻּמּוֺ) + מַחֲרֵשָׁתוֺ 1 Samuel 13:20, read probably דָּרְבָּנוֺ his goad (so ᵐ5ᵑ6 We Dr, see 1 Samuel 13:21); plural absolute מַחֲרֵשֹׁת 1 Samuel 13:21 (+ similar list; on text of both verses see Dr).

Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

מַחֲרֵשָׁה & מַחֲרֶשֶׁת f. 1 Samuel 13:20, two instruments merits of husbandry, both with edges, one of which perhaps denoted the ploughshare (from the root חָרַשׁ No. 3), the other the coulter. For the pl. of both מַחֲרֵשׁוֹת is used verse 21 1 Samuel 13:21. As to the form of ploughs in the East, see Paulsen, Ackerbau d. Morgenländer, page 52; Niebuhr’s Description of Arabia, page 155; as to the Egyptian plough, Description de l’Egypte, i. tab. 70, 71.
