כָּנַע unused in Kal, to bow the knee, to fall on one’s knees (kindred to כָּרַע, which see); a widely extended root, see γόνυ, γνυ (in γνυπετεῖν), genu, Knie; [“Sanscr. ganu”] γωνία, ἰγνύα, hollow of the knee; Aram. נְּנָא, ܓܢܐܳ to bow down, and, with the third radical hardened, knicken, einknicken. In Hebrew it is
(1) to fold, or lay together, zufammenbiegen, zufammenlegen; hence to collect, to bind together bundles (see כִּנְעָה ), compare Arab. كنع to draw together, to be drawn together, Conj. I., V., VII.
(2) to be low, depressed, used of land (see כְּנַעַן ), to be depressed in spirit (כְּנַע Ithpeal, and كنع Conj. I., IV., id).
Hiphil הִכְנִיעַ to bow down, to bring any one low, Job 40:12; Psalms 107:12; Isaiah 25:5 especially enemies by victory gained over them, 2 Samuel 8:1; 1 Chronicles 17:10, 18:1 Psalms 81:15.
Niphal נִכְנַע
(1) to be brought low, subdued (used of a vanquished enemy), Judges 3:30, 8:28 11:33 1 Samuel 7:13.
(2) to submit oneself, to behave oneself submissively, especially before God or a divine messenger, followed by לִפְנֵי, מִפְּנֵי, and מִלִּפְנֵי. 1 Kings 21:29, “seest thou, how Ahab has humbled himself before me?” 2 Kings 22:19; 2 Chronicles 12:7, 30:11 33:23 36:12.
