Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

כָּנַס

(1)  to collect, gather, to heap up, as stones, Ecclesiastes 3:5 treasures, Ecclesiastes 2:8, 26 water, Psalms 33:7.

(2) to gather together, persons. Esther 4:16; 1 Chronicles 22:2

[“(3) to hide, see Hithp. and deriv. מִכְנָסַיִם.”]

(Aram. כְּנַם to collect, to gather together. Arab. كنز id., also, to lay up, elsewhere كنس. Cognate to this are the transposed roots נָכַס; whence נֶכֶס treasure, and סָכַן; whence מִסְכְּנוֹת stores: also, by a softening of letters, נָּנַז.)

Piel, i.q. Kal No. 2, to gather together persons. Ezekiel 22:21, 39:28 Psalms 147:2.

Hithpael, to hide oneself away, to wrap oneself up. Isaiah 28:20, וְהַמַּסֵּכָה צָרָה כְּהִתְכַּנֵּם “and the covering is too narrow for one to wrap himself in it.” Compare כְּ B 5.

Hence מִכְנָסַיִם [“כּוֹס, כִּיס”].
