מִכְנָס (from the root כָּנַס), only in plur. or dual, constr. מִכְנְסֵי breeches of the Hebrew priests, so called from their hiding and concealing their nakedness (root כָּנַס). Josephus (Arch. iii. 7, § 1 ), describes them in these words, διάζωμα περὶ τὰ αἰδοῖα ῥαπτὸν ἐκ βύσσου κλωστῆς εἰργνύμενον, ἐμβαινόντων εἰς αν̓τὸ τῶν ποδῶν ὡσπερεὶ ἀναξνρίδος· ἀποτέμνεται δὲ ὑπὲρ ἥμισυ καὶ τελευτῆσαν ἄχοι τῆς λαγόνος περὶ αὐτὴν ἀποσφίγγεται.
