The shepherd always carried his staff for guiding, leading and protecting the flock. The flock was bound to the shepherd, as the staff was a sign of his authority over the sheep. The yoke was a staff laid across the shoulders of two oxen. The oxen were then tied to the yokes at the neck, binding the two together for plowing or pulling a cart. A people bound together. A wound bound with bandages.

(1) to beat, to strike, to smite. Judges 5:26, הָֽלְמָה סִיסְרָא “she smote Sisera;” Psalms 74:6, 141:5 Isaiah 41:7, ה֫וֹלֶם פַּעַם who smote the anvil, pr. הוֹלֵם פַּעַם. As to the change of the accent, see Lehrg. p. 175, 308. Used of the hoof of a horse striking the ground, Judges 5:22. Metaph. הֲלוּמֵי יַיִן Isaiah 28:1, smitten by wine, drunkards; compare Gr. οἰνοπλήξ, Lat. percussus tempora Baccho. Tibull. As to similar expressions in Arabic, see my Comment. on Isa. loc. cit.
(2) to smite in pieces, to break, Isaiah 16:8.
(3) to be dissolved, to break up (intrans.) as an army, to be scattered; Germ. fich zerfchlagen. 1 Samuel 14:16, וַיֵּלֶךְ וַהֲלֹם “and (the hosts) were scattered more and more.”
